February 19,2017, will forever be etched in our mind, as a day we could have lost the baby out of our 7 children. D'Carrius Carr, is a Sophomore at Livingstone College in Salisbury,NC who is majoring in Biology Science to become a Firemen. He is very athletic with a concentration in weightlifting and a bigger than life passion for football. He is a self-taught amazing drummer at our church. D'Carrius was attending a college frat party with some friends. While there he saw a young lady being beat up by an unknown frat guy(A). He stepped in to defend her honor, and asked him to stop. Guy A sucker punched my son in the face, therefore leading to an altercation. Guy B (who also lives in my son's dorm) broke it up. Due to other activites going on the sponsors decided to end the party early. My son exited the building, and was approached by Guy C (who is bestfriends with Guy A & B) who said he wanted a rematch. My son said, "NO, I'm done!" Guy C pulled a gun out and shot my son in the groin, close range. My son had to be airlifted from Salisbury, NC to Winston-Salem, NC. He was in the operating room within minutes of his arrival, he was given 18 pints of blood. So far, he has had 6 surgeries, 7 blood transfusions and he has been in the hospital 3 weeks and counting. After release from the hospital (date unknown at this point) he will be admitted into a rehab facility for approximately 6 weeks and then released to go home with a home health care nurse. I have medical insurance, however there is a certain percentage that the insurance company covers and the rest is up to me. The medical bills are starting to roll in and the villian (Guy C) has not been caught, therefore making me the responsible party of all medical expenses. Prior to this near fatal shooting, my husband of 26 1/2 years was unemployed due to his disability. With no other financial resources coming in, I had to take FMLA to be here with our son in Winston-Salem, NC. In closing, pray for D'Carrius' full recovery healthwise, (spiritually, mentally, physically and educationally).
