Hi, my name is Carolina, and I’m organizing this fundraiser for my friend Karilyn Mora and her 5-year-old son, Atticus.

Karilyn has been Hannah’s early intervention teacher—more than that, she has become family to us. She has brought light, compassion, and hope into our lives during some of our hardest moments. We recently celebrated Atticus’ 5th birthday together. He was born with quadriplegia, and though he cannot speak verbally, Karilyn understands him in ways only a mother can.

A few weeks ago, both my daughter Hannah and Atticus were admitted to Valley Children’s Hospital. Even with everything happening with Atticus, Karilyn stopped by our room to check in on us. That is just who she is—always giving, always caring.

Since then, Atticus’ condition became more complex. He was transferred to a hospital in San Francisco, far from their home, friends, and support system. Doctors determined that he will need a tracheostomy. But because he tested positive for a virus, surgery has to be delayed for at least six more weeks, while he remains hospitalized. Once the tracheostomy is done, Atticus will need to stay in the hospital for a minimum of three months.

This long hospital stay means Karilyn is unable to work right now, as she is caring for Atticus full-time. She has applied for financial assistance through different programs, and while some help has come through, it is limited and temporary.

Being away from home for weeks turning into months — while still needing to cover rent, basic living expenses, travel, and food — has become more than one family can carry alone.
