Our dear friend DC Bloom has been through a lot in recent years, but he’s always kept a smile on his face and constantly brimming with optimism. Through three strokes, two open-heart surgeries, a burst abdominal aneurysm, DC’s continually inspired us with his ability to put life’s seeming unfairness in perspective. We’ve been amazed as he channels the many challenges he’s been given in productive and creative ways. Many of us have walked his block with him as he’s struggled to recover from the stroke he suffered in February of 2017, and we’ve marveled at his determination and steadfast conviction that no matter how frustratingly slow the progress has been, one must keep one’s chin up keep putting one foot in front of the other. Even when those feet are struggling to navigate a block behind a walker.
And now...on top of everything DC has confronted, he recently lost his job with the Texas state government as the result of vision issues his 2017 stroke left him with. And if that’s not bad enough, he was only 8 months away from being able to retire with full health insurance benefits.
So he needs a little help from his many, many friends. Your donation to this GoFundMe campaign will help DC pay for health insurance and physical physical therapy. It will help pay for another pair of prescription prism glasses that he needs. It will go towards a light weight wheelchair he can use for those times he’s too weak to utilize his walker.
And your help will also ensure that the new album DC starting writing weeks after his latest stroke will get finished and released. He’s calling it “Pack Up the Moon, which comes from a line in the W.H. Auden poem Funeral Blues. The twelve songs he hopes to share with the world are uniquely DC-esque, to coin a phrase, and chockfull of all the things that have made him the beloved regional touring act he’s long aspired to be. The joke, of course, is that he’s always been that beloved figure in the hearts and minds of those of us who know and love him. Check out this video of the title track, and you’ll see that no stinkin’ stroke could stop him from writing and singing like the DC of old.
