DC Artists in Solidarity with Standing Rock
DC Artists will travel to #StandingRock from 11/30 - 12/7, erecting large scale #WATERISLIFE murals on the way along the Rustbelt, in Cleveland, Detroit & Flint, Chicago, Minneapolis.
ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN
We are a collective of diverse DC-based graffiti writers, street artists, and organizers contributing to the movement against race/class injustice and corporate oligarchy - and for the protection of human dignity and the future of our planet.
Many of us are artists of color and working class artists. We understand current day development often belongs to a historical system of abuse of lives and dignity of poor folks and communities of color. Communities of color are constantly being dispossessed of their dignity, livelihoods, neighborhoods and homes, and left without the resources to fight for them. From land grabs in DC to land grab in Standing Rock, what we are facing is nothing less than colonialism. We need to fight back. In this case, we take responsibility as residents on stolen land, and we are determined to do what we can to support the Indigenous-led fight against DAPL.
From 11/30 to 12/7, we will travel in solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux from DC to Standing Rock - executing large scale #WaterisLife murals along the way in Cleveland, Flint/Detroit, Chicago, and Minneapolis. We will organize interactive, multimedia art events (doubly serving as fundraisers) around the creation of the murals in each city, and by doing so, will harness the power of art to disrupt the media blackout on DAPL, challenge colonial violence, mobilize action for Standing Rock. Funds raised at each city will go directly to #WaterProtectors at Standing Rock.
We are stepping up as locally rooted artists in DC because our symbolic location provides a valuable platform for us to organize nationally. With local communities and artists taking the lead in each city, we hope to together raise awareness and elevate Native voices for Standing Rock, as well as for first nations worldwide, combining art and activism to achieve global social & environmental justice. #NoDAPL #STOPDAPL

Please consider making a small donation to us! We need help funding paint and event supplies, and transportation costs. We will use as much paint that we already have as we can. We will also use connections as much as possible for lodging. Remaining donations will be given to elders at Standing Rock to use as they decide for their needs on the ground.
