John Hetman Medical Expense Fund
Donation protected
This campaign is to support one of the kindest, most helpful and hardworking people I have ever met. John Hetman is a man I am blessed to call friend. His wife of nearly 27 years, Deirde, has been his best friend even longer, since they were in middle school. He has two beautiful kids to whom he has devoted his life. A graduate of St. Edward High school, some people will remember John from the class of 1985. Others might have met John through his work as a Rad Tech in local hospitals, most recently Lutheran Hospital. Many have enjoyed John's company at various Irish festivals and events around town. No matter where he is, John has an infectious smile and a willingness to lend a helping hand. Now John and his family could use a helping hand from us.
A type 1 diabetic since age 7, John's body has experienced many of the complications that come with a lifelong chronic illness. He has been though multiple surgeries and hospitalizations, and has always managed to come back from each health crisis, including organ transplants and open heart surgeries. This most recent hospitalization may be his biggest challenge yet.
John is currently inpatient at the Cleveland Clinic, Main Campus, for the third time in as many months. This most recent admission was prompted by fluid retention and shortness of breath that was first thought to be an exacerbation of CHF, or a pneumonia, or both. Over the past week a cascade of complications has made extreme interventions necessary. John is currently in ICU, still being treated for pneumonia and is experiencing severe hemmorhaging in both lungs. He is currently intubated and receiving ECMO. His transplanted kidney is not functioning optimally, requiring dialysis. His family and friends are praying for a miracle, and appreciate the support of prayers more than they can say.
John has been unable to work for many months, and Deirdre is taking FMLA to spend time at the hospital with John. The loss of income along with accumulating medical bills combines to make this not only a health crisis but a financial hardship as well. I have asked Deirde's permission to start this gofundme campaign to assist them in meeting their expenses. Gofundme deducts 5% of each donation as a charge for their service, and processing fee of about 3% will also be deducted from each donation by WePay, the online payment service provider gofundme uses. The rest of the money donated will go directly to Deirdre and John. If you are able and so inclined, please help by making a donation and sharing this link with others. It will make a tremendous difference. Thank You!
