I went to Kampala Uganda as part of my MPH practicum in 2014 and met Uncle Sam. He told me that he was developing a school in a community that did not have one (!) and asked if I would help. Of course I would. Since then, I have been sending him money that I could but he has been so successful that my assistance is not at all enough. Here I am with Uncle Sam in 2018 when I returned to visit and see the school along with one of the nursery school classes and a teacher.
There are currently 28 children, all from families lacking access to income or the ability to pay for their children's education. Money is needed for clothes and teachers. There is both an urgent need (teachers haven't been paid for May/June) and a long term need (60 more students want to join for the next academic year!) The cost of paying the teachers is only $190/month.
Many of these students are surviving on one meal a day. In addition to that the school gives children some porridge, but growing minds need more than that and sam hopes to soon provide a meal at the end of the class. Of course, money is required to do that.
I will update this more and properly express the amazing individual that Sam is later, but wanted to get this out into the world ASAP given the urgent need to raise money for the backpay of these teachers (or they may leave) as well as to create some cushion for Uncle Sam who is doing the most with the least, but needs some cushion so that he can continue to develop the school, in which he has really invested his life savings to ensure the lives of these students.
