Dayana Asencio - Medical Funds: A story of hope

We would like to start off by telling you about Dayana and then we will explain the unfortunate events that have led to this Gofundme being created. Dayana is from Guatemala, a little country just below Mexico, she has lived in a place called Zacapa her entire life and has achieved many great things. Through her hard work, dedication and determination Dayana pursued her dreams of becoming a Pediatric doctor. Her friends and family know her as "Daya" a person full of life, someone who loves to help others in any way she can and someone who is selfless. She leads a life that consists of attending to patients at the pediatric department in Zacapa's regional public hospital as well as her own clinic, working out, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and on her time off she loves to spend time with friends and family. In Guatemala, the healthcare system is much different than here in Canada since the public hospitals unfortunately lack a lot of equipment and medications needed to help people in need. Dayana works at the public hospital where she provides health treatments and services to the many children who can't afford the luxury of a private hospital.
This is Daya, a person who loves life and has a lot of it left to live, unfortunately, this was all put in jeopardy on the afternoon of Monday February 4th, 2019. On this day Daya started off her day just as she normally would by going to the hospital to start work and treat her little patients, at around 12pm she headed out towards the parking lot. She got close to her car when suddenly a couple of men came up pulled out a gun and shot her a total of four times. She was rushed into the hospital that fortunately was a few steps away and was immediately treated in order to stabilize her enough to be rushed into an OR. Daya fought that day with a lot of strength and was able to make it out of surgery, the following day the doctors made the decision to take Daya to Guatemala City, the country's capital where better care and more specialized doctors would be able to treat her in order to try and save her life. Today, two weeks after tragedy struck Daya is still battling between life and death. She has had five surgeries and has beat the odds and shown all of us to never give up hope, the doctors are amazed at the strength that she has and her willingness to cling onto life. Unfortunately, complications always arise with trauma patients, she has developed septic shock, liver and kidney failure amongst many other things. She has been treated at this private hospital since Tuesday February 5th since the public hospitals do not have the necessary resources to treat her. Unfortunately, this has become quite expensive and at this point and time the bill is reaching the $200,000 US dollars mark. Daya still has a long road of recovery ahead of her, this also means that that bill will continue to rise which is why we need help in order to ensure that we do everything we can to give her the best chances of survival. She has already proven to many what it means to fight and have hope, she has been fighting for her life for the past two weeks and has not given up. As her family we are desperately trying to do everything we can to do our part and help Daya in any way we can and get her back to continue to help to save children's lives. We ask that you contribute in any way you can, anything helps, we are aware that the goal is really high but unfortunately medical treatment for this type of situation is extremely expensive. En Guatemala, el sistema de salud es muy precario, lamentablemente los hospitales públicos carecen de muchos equipos y medicamentos necesarios para ayudar a las personas necesitadas. Dayana trabaja en el hospital público donde ofrece tratamientos y servicios de salud a muchos niños que no pueden darse el lujo de ir a un hospital privado.
Esta es Daya, una persona que ama la vida y a la que le queda mucho por vivir. Desafortunadamente, todo esto se puso en peligro la tarde del lunes 4 de febrero de 2019. En este día, Daya comenzó su día tal como lo haría normalmente. yendo al hospital para comenzar a trabajar y tratar a sus pequeños pacientes, alrededor de las 12 pm, se dirigió hacia el estacionamiento. Se acercó a su auto cuando de repente un par de hombres sacaron una pistola y le dispararon un total de cuatro veces. La llevaron al hospital que afortunadamente estaba a pocos pasos de distancia y fue tratada de inmediato para estabilizarla lo suficiente como para que la llevaran a un quirófano. Las balas perforaron ambos intestinos y rompieron su brazo izquierdo. Daya luchó ese día con mucha fuerza y pudo salir de la cirugía. Al día siguiente, los médicos tomaron la decisión de llevar a Daya a la ciudad de Guatemala, que se encuentra a 140 km de donde ocurrió esta tragedia; en la capital del país puede recibir mejor atención y tener mayores probabilidades de sobrevivir. Hoy, dos semanas después de la tragedia, Daya sigue luchando entre la vida y la muerte. Ella se ha sometido a cinco cirugías, ha superado las probabilidades y nos ha demostrado a todos que nunca hay que perder la esperanza. Los médicos están sorprendidos por la fuerza que tiene y su voluntad de aferrarse a la vida. Desafortunadamente, las complicaciones siempre surgen con pacientes de trauma, ella ha desarrollado shock séptico, insuficiencia hepática y renal, entre muchas otras cosas.
