Help Dawn get to the Amen Clinic
Donation protected
Dear friends and family,
I am writing on behalf of my Aunt, Dawn Bovard, who was diagnosed with a seizure disorder 20+ years ago following an automobile accident. The seizures were controlled for many years with medication until Menopause caused a hormonal shift that changed everything. After taking hormone therapy for several years, she developed blood clots in both her leg and lungs. At this time, it was discovered she has a congenital blood disorder, Factor V Leiden, with a protein c deficiency, which causes her blood to always be thick and require blood thinners. Hormone therapy is no longer an option. Unfortunately, the seizure medications (which many have been tried) and the blood thinner medication are at odds with each other, requiring weekly blood tests for minimal stability.
Prior to this diagnosis, she was in corporate management at the American Cancer Society. She has always been willing to be of service, is a gifted artist and very active in her church community. In the years since her diagnosis, conventional seizure treatments and an arsenal of daily medications have not been sufficient to adequately treat her neurological problems. She lives with worsening memory problems, difficulty with speech and with balance. Aunt Dawn's symptoms are increasing so that she needs more specialized help than her local doctor is able to give her. Aunt Dawn came to me this past Thanksgiving with a book by Dr. Daniel Amen and said “I found a doctor who I need to see.” I was so happy, because I knew this was exactly what she needed.
There is a very special Functional Neurology office in Atlanta that specializes in treating complex brain disorders including seizures, traumatic brain injury, ADD and more, with a unique holistic approach called the Amen Clinic. The Amen Clinic employs an integrated science-based approach for total body healing with focus on the brain. As a Physician Assistant in the field of Functional Medicine, I have seen first-hand how this approach changes patients’ lives whom conventional medicine failed. I believe if there is anyone out there who can help Aunt Dawn, it’s the Amen Clinic. The extensive, specialized medical work-up involves a SPECT brain scan and 3 days of neuropsychiatric testing.
This comes at a price that is currently cost-prohibitive on her fixed income. The cost of the 3-day visit and the doctor consultation with 1 follow up is $3,700. This doesn't include travel (she cannot drive due to her seizures) and lodging during her stay. We are asking for help from our family and friends to get her to the Amen Clinic. Any amount is greatly appreciated.
