As some of you have already heard Dawn has had to finish her chemotherapy treatments. She has had several rounds of chemo but has also had some serious side effects such as nerve damage, making it very difficult for her to walk. Last week her team of doctors decided, after looking at some test results, that chemo was no longer an option. While some of her tumors are smaller or staying the same size, others are continuing to grow despite the chemotherapy. If she were to continue chemo there is a very high possibility she would become paralyzed .
My Brave sister has decided to try another type of therapy called immunotherapy.
Immunotherapy is a treatment of injections to stimulate her own immune system to fight the cancer itself. Dawn’s cancer is so rare there are no statistics yet as to how well she will respond to treatment and while many countries, like the U.S., have free clinical trials for this type of therapy, unfortunately Canada does not.
If & when Dawn begins to respond well to the therapy, and her health starts to get better, hopefully she can then be considered to travel for the free trial to somewhere in the U.S.
Until then this treatment is going to cost around $6000,00 a month for Dawn to receive. Her Dr. told us after a couple of months they can do some more tests to see if it is helping .
Because of the aggressive nature of her tumors, time is very important and she will begin this treatment early next week (august 27ish ).
I have had the privilege to see how my sister has made a difference not just in my life but in the lives of so many of her friends and family that i really would like to make a difference in hers by removing the stress of the cost of immunotherapy and for her to just be able to concentrate on getting well.
This is where her GoFundMe page will hopefully help me to do that. Every penny this raises will go directly to Dawn to ease her battle with this horrible disease.
