Dawn 'Til Dusk Challenge 2019

Mark your calendars. Our annual Dawn 'Til Dusk Challenge returns on the 5th OCTOBER 2019!

For one day, we will have a continuous relay, starting as the sun comes up over the cites of Leeds and London.... until the sun goes down. Relayers (is that even a word... it is now!) will circle the courses at Roundhay Park (Leeds) and Highbury Fields (London).

So why are we doing this? Our vision is to have a Mini Mermaid and Young Triton programme in every primary school across the UK. The relays raise funds to help us activate our programme in more schools and community centres, especially in areas of need.

Why is this so important? Loads of research came out over the past year connecting physical activity with our overall well-being. At the same time, children (and in particular girls) are dropping out of PE and sports at a much younger age (9), citing a lack of confidence. We work with girls and boys to create safe, judgement-free environments where first and foremost, children simply have a ton of fun moving their bodies. We complement that with other activities to strengthen their resilience, belief in their worth, their value and their voice.

Mini Mermaid Running Club UK use physical activity combined with mindfulness to strengthen  a girl's self-confidence, self-esteem and self-compassion. When a girl participates in Mini Mermaids, she shows more resilience, opens herself to new experiences and learns to be kinder to herself and others. These create the foundation of a girl's self-worth and value, which begins to erode in girls as young as 7. We disrupt this decline by replacing the fear of failure with the power of possibility.

Young Tritons inspire every boy to become emotionally and physically balanced through self-compassion, empathy, cooperation, and a broadened definition of strength. In the UK, according to Young Minds, suicide is the most common cause of death among boys age 5-19. Our Young Tritons learn the value of conversations and truly listening to each other, while experiencing a different type of teamwork, built on support rather than competition.

Thank you for your generosity and support of our vision  You truly are fintastic!
