David's Road to TBI Recovery

On May 14, 2022, David and Morgan Sorenson survived a terrible car crash when another driver ran a stop sign at a rural intersection in Canyon County, Idaho. David received the impact, being T-Boned on the driver's side of the vehicle. He sustained a severe Traumatic Brain Injury and was life-flighted to a local hospital. He underwent multiple surgeries that night, including a Decompressive Craniectomy to relieve the pressure and swelling on his brain.

The odds of survival and recovery from such severe head trauma are pretty bleak. But as the days went by, David began to come out of his coma. As the weeks went by, he fought hard for every little gain of cognition and movement. He started making progress, little by little. Opening his eyes, moving his limbs, communicating using gestures, and momentarily standing on his own two feet were just a few of the big and little victories we celebrated. The next several weeks were a rollercoaster ride as David faced unexpected complications and setbacks. He struggled to overcome them and regain what he had lost. Experiencing Hydrocephalus (cerebrospinal fluid leakage), David braved a series of brain surgeries to place an effective shunt (drain) to manage the CSF leak. He then underwent Cranioplasty surgery to replace his bone flap, which was removed the night of the accident. After that, his condition began to slowly and steadily improve again. Following 15+ long weeks in the hospital, David was transitioned to a rehabilitation facility where he continues his recovery process. This next chapter brings new hope and new hurdles.
