My name is David and I need your help with my Eagle Scout project for Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia. Catholic Charities is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping the community and Nation. What I’m doing is making 100 disaster relief buckets and 100 hygiene kits. These bucket and kits will be sent out to people in areas effected by natural disasters. I’ve had family and friends that suffered damage and loss due to hurricanes, so I know how impactful these buckets and kits can be, because after natural disasters cleaning supplies and hygiene items are really hard to get. By supplying Catholic Charities with these buckets, they will have them ready for people when they need them most. The reason I am doing this is because on average 3.1 million people in the U.S. are affected by natural disasters every year. Virginia alone has suffered 67 natural disasters between 2003 and 2022. Over the past 5 years the U.S. has had an average of 18 natural disasters each year, and in 2022 they caused $175.2 billion in damage and 474 fatalities. Even though this seems like a small number of buckets and kits, they will help many people. I’ve been going to local business asking for donations and have made some progress, but I still have a way to go until I finish this project.
