David had a mountain biking accident at Duthie Hill on September 30th around 6:15pm. While the details of the accident are still a little hazy, we do know that he was ahead of Damien and just a little out of sight on the trail when he crashed. When Damien found him he had been unconscious for about 5 minutes. Luckily a few adult riders came by soon after and helped Damien call 911. He was taken to Overlake Hospital ER and then transferred to ICU Monday night.
He has brain swelling, bleeding in his brain in a few different places, fractured jaw, broken nose and face lacerations. David has been in the ICU since Monday. He was on a ventilator and required 24/7 nurse supervision for the first few days. Thankfully he has pulled through those first few really scary days! Jaw surgery is scheduled for Friday and he will have a shiny new titanium jaw wired shut for at least 2 weeks. The family is hoping he will be discharged soon, but the long road ahead is really just beginning at this point. He will need intense home occupational therapy and physical therapy to help with daily living activities and numerous follow-ups with specialists.
David only had 3 days of Paid Time Off (PTO), which have now been used up. The family has requested shared leave from his employer, Port of Seattle, which is where employees can donate their unused leave to David so that he has fewer unpaid days. If you or someone you know is a Port Of Seattle employee, please consider sharing your leave.
Medical bills are going to be expensive. The medical costs already total $65,000 and rising. The estimate by the time David gets discharged will likely exceed $100,000. Additional costs will come in the weeks/months of rehabilitation ahead. Unfortunately, David will not have any pay coming in while he is out of work. Donations are greatly appreciated by the family to help with daily living expenses and mounting medical bills. There is a long road ahead for the family as they figure out what their new normal looks like. Any amount of help is a blessing.
