May 28, 2018 – As some of you know I have been battling cancer for nearly four years now and I recently found out I will need to start another round of chemo. This will be my fifth round of chemo in less than 4 years.
Because of the disease, well actually it is the treatment, it has been impossible for me to maintain working and any real income. Maria & I have exhausted our reserves, and Social Security Disability does not pay much at all. Just meeting our usual bills is increasingly difficult, let alone any added transportation/medical bills for me. We have two kids in college and our youngest is finishing sixth grade this May.
So I am reaching out to family and friends and complete strangers hoping you can donate funds to help me BEAT this.
For the moment, I hope to continue with conventional chemo treatment but I would like to investigate other options and for that I would need money to travel to these other clinics Like Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Phoenix, maybe clinical trials of new drugs, as well as other nontraditional treatments, but I need to go see the doctors or clinics for in person consultations and evaluations. The travels may require an overnight stay or maybe even a few days. Needless to say all these options require money, money we do not have.
I hope my friends and family members will share this with their friends passing it along to others and they will be able to tell them this is a real need for me and for my family. We need financial help now.
I am told some businesses as well as service groups and other organizations will sometimes donate to those in need so if you know of anyone such programs please pass my story along to them and ask them to please donate so to help me and my family.
Maria and I thank you for any donations you can give us and our family.
PS – I am waiting to after June 14 to public post this. I am waiting for after our college daughters have finials to tell them. So if you know them please do not share in a public way.
Here is the full story if you are interested. My story begins in August of 2014 when after a colonoscopy I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Due to the location it would require a specialized procedure and I was referred to UCI (University California Irvine) to get it done. The surgeon thought it was only stage I and I would require only surgery and I would be done. However after the surgery I was informed it was a little worse, it was actually stage II B and I would need to also have chemo and radiation, which I did.
All seemed well but in my follow up my blood markers started to rise in 2015 and additional imaging found problems in my lungs. My doctors had me continue with blood test which showed the blood marker level increasing and then additional imaging showed the nodules (small tumors) getting bigger and increasing in numbers. I was placed on chemo again, this time it was an infusion type, 12 sessions over 24 weeks. The images at the half way point and again at the end showed the nodules remained the same both in numbers and size.
I got a short break from infusion chemo when my doctor placed me a pill type chemo for maintenance as the blood marker came up slightly. This program was fourteen days on, seven days off; I did that for nearly 6 months. But soon after the blood markers were rising again and imaging showed the nodules increasing in numbers and size.
In a PET/CT in fall 2017 the number of nodules had become innumerable my oncologist wanted to try to confirm the type of cancer in the lungs and so I got a lung biopsy, which did prove I have Stage IV Metastatic Colorectal Cancer throughout both lungs and possibly other areas. I started my fourth round shortly thereafter, a different cocktail this time.
In early 2018 with the new cocktail the blood markers were going down and imaging at the halfway for the first time showed the nodules getting smaller and many had gone away (or were smaller than the imaging could detect). My last session was in early April and I was to get new imaging in early May.
May 15 2018, well the imaging showed the nodules once again growing. Oncologist recommending chemo again, it will be my fifth round of it.
I am getting a DNA test to check for certain gene markers and other DNA variants so to see what other options I have available to beat this.
For the moment, I hope to continue with conventional chemo treatment but I would like to investigate other options and for that I would need money to travel to these other clinics Like Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Phoenix, maybe participate in clinical trials of new a drug(s), as well as other nontraditional treatments, but I need to go see the doctors or clinics for in person consultations and evaluations. The travels may require an overnight stay or maybe even a few days. Needless to say all these options require money, money we do not have.
Thanks for taking the time to read my story.
Thank you for any help you can give.
Thank you for your kind thoughts and prayers.
Thank you for passing this along to others to help spread my story and need.
Thanks again and all the best to all who read and share this and of course a special heartfelt thank you to those that donate to help – David BEAT Cancer.
I will post more information about my progress as I can.
