Help Dave Recover From a Devastating Auto Accident
Donation protected
My name is Pete Traynor, this is my friend David Sparaco (the clean shaven guy to my left in the photo) I am organizing this fundraiser for him as he recovers from a devastating automobile accident
Dave’s Whole Life Changed in an Instant
While driving home from work June 10, 2020 Dave was in a devastating head on collision. The vehicle that hit him floored it on a turn to pass the car in front of it, crossing the double yellow line into the oncoming lane. Dave was unable to see the oncoming car until the last second because of the turn, he turned sharply towards the shoulder but sadly it was too late to avoid the impact. The driver that hit Dave was doing well over 60 mph, making the combined speed of the colliding vehicles close to 100 mph. The force of the impact flipped Dave’s car, leaving him pinned in the overturned vehicle for 30 minutes. Emergency crews had to peel the roof back of his car to safely extract him.
Just prior to the crash, totally unaware of what was about to happen, a voice said to Dave “buckle your seat belt and set your cruise control to 35 mph”. Little did he know at the time, that voice would save his life!
Dave was transported to Johns Hopkins Bayview Trauma Center, where he was treated for many injuries including a serious concussion, punctured lung, fractured sternum, shattered left femur and knee, fractured left fibula, ankle and heel, shattered right heel, fractured right femur, multiple bilateral rib fractures, six spinal fractures, many bulging discs throughout his entire spine, massive rotator cuff tear, blunt force trauma to his heart & throat and subcutaneous emphysema as a result of the seat belt and air bag.
Two emergency surgeries were performed: the shattered femur and knee required a full prosthetic replacement of each & the crushed heel had to be fully reconstructed as well. In total he sustained 17 fractures all but the ones operated on will be left to heal on their own. During his stay he developed bilateral pneumonia and a pulmonary embolism as well. After 14 days in ICU he was transferred to a sub acute rehab facility to begin the pain staking process of getting to the point of being able to bear weight on either leg so that he can pursue more advanced and rigorous therapy. For a several months he will be in a full torso brace and a cervical brace to minimize the risk of further damage to his spine. The path back to physical independence will take Dave at least a year, most likely more.
Due to the Coronavirus he has not been able to have any visitors, not even family and friends. Many people have sent cards and flowers which are a comfort to Dave during this difficult time.
Dave Is Going To Need Help
Because the vehicle that hit Dave was uninsured, the only insurance coverage is Uninsured Motorist, which is only enough to cover a portion of the medical expenses and the property damage to his vehicle. His health insurance has a $3250.00 deductible after that they will pay the majority of the medical bills, but he will be left with large out of pocket expenses. He will be out of work for an indeterminate amount of time, receiving no pay. Last July he bought a house and now is faced with figuring out how he is going to be able to keep up the payments so he can have a place to come home to finish his recovery when it’s time.
All though the outcome remains uncertain at this time, there are two things I do know for sure, Dave is extremely grateful to be alive and he does not have an ounce of quit in him, he is giving this challenge his all. He is in good spirits and is facing this devastating situation straight on, adapting to whatever comes his way. But even the strongest of people can use help in the toughest of times.
Back Story and Brief Bio
Dave and I have known each other for over 50 years… He is the kind of person you would be proud to call a friend and the most honorable & giving person you will ever meet, always at the ready to help his family, friends, co-workers and anyone in need. Anyone who knows Dave would gladly agree that he is the kindest, most generous and funniest guy they know. My life has been enriched since the very first day we met, Dave is more than a friend, he is family he is my brother.
Dave is a very happy, fun loving guy! His biggest passion is scuba diving, but he also loves: travel, parasailing, theater, musical productions, movies, working on his home, woodworking and building furniture at his shop. Dave has always been a supporter of emergency/first responders. He also supports a variety of other charities, with a special devotion to Believe Big.
Any Support Will Be Greatly Appreciated
All Donations Will Go Directly to David Sparaco
Please include Dave and his family in your thoughts and prayers. Your donation will help allow Dave the peace of mind he needs to focus on recuperation and healing by helping pay for his portion of the medical expenses, ambulance/transportation costs for medical care & testing, medications, health insurance premiums, mortgage payments, utility bills, monthly expenses, household maintenance and food for meals when he returns home.
I am asking for help on Dave’s behalf because he would never ask for help for himself.
Dave is just a humble guy making his way through life rarely thinking of himself devoting most of his time and energy to thinking of and helping everyone else. I don’t think it ever even occurred to him that other people could or would even care about him. Now the time has come when Dave is the one who needs help.
Please help show Dave people do care about him.
Prayers go out to Dave for full & speedy recovery. Prayers to his family as well, in addition to this tragedy Dave’s father and older brother passed within a couple months of each other this year.
Thank you for your support,
Pete Traynor
p.s. – I will post be posting periodic updates of Dave’s progress throughout his journey back to health <3
