David Smith Car Accident Recovery Support

My name is Justin Smith, On Father's Day 6/21/20, my family and I visited with my dad for lunch. We grilled sausage, talked about going fishing and had a good time before he had to leave for work. We said goodbye, hugged, and he left. As the rest of the family sat together enjoying time together, unbeknownst to us, my father was being pulled from his truck by first responders. According to reports his truck rolled over on the freeway in a chain-reaction crash. His truck is totaled, but beside the vehicle lost my dad also lost his leg. After being pulled from the truck he was rushed into emergency surgery to amputate his leg.  According to the doctor he was very close to losing his life, but he is a fighter and is alive.   Since the surgery my father has been in an induced coma and no one has been able to talk to him. At the time of me writing this he may not even be aware that he has lost his leg.

My father does not care about anything more than his family, especially his three sons. As his oldest he has told me countless times that everything he does is for his sons. He has always done everything he can to make sure we were safe and secure. He always put us before himself. We want nothing more than to put him first now and try to help bring his new life close to normal. He was an avid fisherman and loved to barbecue with his family on the shoreline. These traditions will be difficult to maintain with his new way of life, but we want to try and continue them as best as possible.

This life changing event is the first of its kind in our family, and we do not know the struggles we will face. Beside fishing and barbecuing, we know we will need more accessibility in his house to adapt to his new way of life. A few areas that will need to be upgraded are the shower and the stairs. These are just two examples of many upgrades we will have to make to help him adapt but it is a start. Any help for my father to get his life as close to normal as possible would be greatly appreciated.

I will continue to update my dad's status below.

As of 7/6/2020 we still have not been able to see my dad because of the pandemic. He has been in an induced coma to help manage pain and recovery since the surgery.
