David Longhenry Four Wheeler Accident

Donation protected
On July 4th,  David was involved in a four wheeler accident. While leaving a friend's house he lost control turning a corner and rolled the fourwheeler. He was knocked unconscious and unresponsive. Paramedics arrived and made the decision to airlift him to Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC). He was intubated prior to takeoff due to his unknown condition. Upon arrival to the emergency room they completed many scans and determined that he was VERY lucky. He had no spinal injury or brain bleed, but he was still unresponsive and had fractured the bones on the left side of his face. They were unable to determine the extent of brain damage due to his condition and remaining unresponsive.

He was admitted to the ICU on 7.4.2020. He was medically sedated and on the ventilator, along with multiple IV's and a feeding tube. The hospital had made the decision to allow his parents in to visit, despite the current COVID pandemic. They spent many hours sitting by his side,  taking to him, praying and waiting for good news.  During this time it was determined that he had developed aspiration pneumonia, which would require IV antibiotics to resolve. The nurses were able to successfully extubate him (remove the breathing tube) on 7.11.2020 and wean him off of sedation. His vital signs remained stable,  although he needed to remain in the ICU on IVs, oxygen, a feeding tube and 1 on 1 monitoring as he was still suffering from pneumonia, confusion, agitation and slurred speech. He was not real cooperative with therapies, but continued to make small strides in the right direction.

David finally got to be transferred to the neurology unit on July 16th. Since his accident he has overcome multiple obstacles and each day is becoming easier.  Here they were able to complete follow up MRI's to further check his brain damage,  but all scans were coming back normal.  This was a slight mystery,  as he still suffered from slurred speech and confusion. He continued to work with therapy and was able to talk a few steps with assistance. He was also able to remember family, friends and other life details, but would get mixed up easily and had very low activity tolerance. The details surrounding the accident aren't remembered.

He was then transferred to the rehab unit on July 23th. He has gotten his feeding tube removed and is currently able to eat soft, mushy foods and liquids at honey thickness while he contines to work with speech therapy.  He is also participating in physical therapy and is beginning to walk with assistance from the therapists.

David will likely remain in the rehab unit for a couple more weeks before he is allowed to discharge home to participate in outpatient therapies. It is expected that it will take a full year for his brain to fully recover and he has a long road ahead of him.

David is self employed and not expected to be able to return to work this year doing concrete. With medical bills continuing to grow, along with missed wages, and monthly bills continuing we are hoping to help relieve some of the financial stress this has and will continue to cause.

All of the thoughts and prayers have not gone unnoticed during this very difficult and stressful time.

Unfortunately due to the COVID pandemic, we are unable to host an in person benefit/silent auction.
