David Heyting's Recovery
As many of you know, David was severely injured in a rock climbing accident on Saturday. He has over 20 years of climbing experience and is one of the safest adventurers any of us knows - this was a shock to all of us. His 15-year old son, Colby, was climbing with him and through his quick actions and clear-headed thinking, was able to lower his unconscious dad and call for help. Two nearby climbers (one a fire-fighter) helped while they waited for rescuers to arrive. David was then carried out on a litter and airlifted to a hospital in Wenatchee, ending up in the ICU. The good news - David is safe and will recover. The bad news - the recovery will be long and hard. He sustained a skull fracture over his brain, fractures near his eye and in his upper jaw, multiple fractures in his spine and neck, and a fracture in his hand, along with multiple bruises, abrasions and a concussion. (I can’t even think about what would have happened if he hadn’t had his helmet on) He is improving slowly, but will have to spend multiple days in the hospital before they will allow him to travel home.
The costs to the Heyting family between the helicopter evacuation, multiple nights in the hospital, hotel in Wenatchee so that Jessica can be near the hospital for her one-hour a day visit, and the inevitable costs that will come in the weeks ahead for his recovery will be substantial.
We know these are tough times for many folks, and if all you have to give right now is your love and support to this family we are so grateful. For those who are able to also help in a more material way, we are hoping to raise enough to help them meet their out-of-pocket maximum. Thank you all for the love and support you've already shown this family.
