Hi my name is Leticia Griego. David Griego was my husband. On Wednesday, August 10, 2022, my mother in law was dropping off my 12 yr old son Diego. She noticed my Viejo was in the Sequoia and went over to say hello. She shook him because he wasn't responding. She touched him immediately and felt like he was already gone. Diego called 911. When Marcos and I arrived, the police officers explained that he was deceased, but they were waiting for the medical examiner to confirm and declare the time of death. She pronounced him dead at 4:46 pm.
The medical examiner explained that he suffered a heart attack. We could not believe it. Ever since I met him, he was afraid of dying that way because his dad died at the age of 56 from a heart attack. My Viejo left us at the age of 51. What saddens me the most is that my boys will have to grow up without their dad. He always looked forward to the day the boys were old enough to attend Las Cruces High School. He played football for LCHS and WNMU. He was so proud of his boys attending the football camp for the second time at LCHS. He loved to pick them up because he loved how it sounded when they yelled "Griego Boys, your dad is here". He was a man who loved with a passion. The song Too Much comes to mind. He enjoyed singing songs and changing the lyrics to fit what he was feeling. He would sing to my boys when they were in the womb. His favorite song was Can't Help Falling in Love by Elvis. On July 29, 2022, we attended our boys first concert and my Viejo's last concert. We could have never imagined that we would only have him 13 more days. My Viejo had many things he fervently loved... God, his boys, me, his family, my family, his friends, dogs and all dogs, football (Steelers), baseball (Reds, Cubs, Dodgers, Giants, Braves, Padres, D-Backs, Rockies to name a few), starbux coffee, giving me a daily back rub, making me breakfast, grilling the most delicious steaks and chicken. teaching students, eating any spicy chile- (the hotter, the better), striking up a conversation with a total stranger when we went on our grocery dates during the weekends, making the masa for the tamales and the masa for the biscochitos during Christmas time (my mom said he had the best hot hands for kneading dough- I agree :o).
My Viejo retired from LCPS May 2020. He could not handle teaching online. That was not his thing at all. He told me, I'm finally ready to retire after 25 yrs. I told him if he was ready, then it was time. He took a year off to take care of us while the 3 of us were teaching and learning online. His goal was to become a history teacher at LCHS. He was looking forward to substituting there next week. He was a big history buff. The saddest thing is that when he retired, so did his life insurance benefits. If he wanted life insurance, then he had to pay out of pocket for it, he rarely did. That's why we are in this dilemma. Funeral needs to be paid in full before it begins. Today we went to Baca's Funeral Home, if everything works out his services will be Saturday, August 20, 2022 at St Albert Newman Center. He will be buried at the Doña Ana Cemetery, and we are still working on the venue for the funeral reception.
Since he loved his Hawaiian shirts so much, in lieu of flowers, we can all be the flowers by wearing flowers if possible. He loved celebrating life and this would make him the happiest. If you wish to donate, we will be forever grateful God bless you all. Give your family an extra hug tonight ❤️
