David Futrell's Recovery
Donation protected
Earlier this year our family received the most devastating news that our dad, David Futrell, was diagnosed with stage 3 laryngeal cancer. After months of his doctor stating that he had an ear infection and allergies, the persistence of his wife and daughter, he got a second opinion.
When he found out the news, Karen and David packed up their house in San Antonio, Texas and moved to Richmond, Virginia in order to be near family for emotional and physical support. In order to offset the costs for the moving truck, hotels, and gas, they had to sell their car. On this drive across the country, David’s trach tube came out and in order to breathe, he had to rely on the quick response of the first responders in Atlanta, Georgia.
David started working with his father at the age of 14, and after 60 years he retired at the young age of 74. David just turned 75 and is a loving and devoted husband and father of four adult children, and a grandfather of 6. He is known to all as honest, responsible, dependable, hardworking, abundantly selfless, and an amazing provider. He does his best to make sure that his family is never without, and always puts his family’s needs before his own. Unfortunately, David is now consumed by a barrage of bills for the treatments, hospitalizations, medical supplies, medication, and doctor's appointments.
David and Karen are reliant on family members for transportation to and from medical appointments, grocery stores, picking up medication, etc. and are in desperate need of their own vehicle. All funds donated would be put towards David’s growing medical bills and aid in helping Dave and Karen acquire a car so that they can get to appointments, run to the grocery store, visit family (eventually) and have more independence.
He is a proud man of dignity and would help his friends, neighbors, or colleagues in any way he could and would never expect a return favor or payment of any sort. He is a great friend and an even better father. All of us who know David are grateful he's in our lives. We are all humbled by his disease and having to ask for help in any way.
At this time we ask that you pass this on to your friends, give if you can, and if you can't...just say a prayer. He has successfully completed treatment, but is still relying on a trach tube to help him breathe and the PEG tube to receive nutrients. David is receiving Home Health Therapy, PT, OT, and weekly nurse visits in order to monitor his health, and work on building his strength and stamina. There is still a chance that his voice box will have to be removed which will include more hospitalizations, trips to hospital for lab work, and speech therapy. He still has a long road ahead of him until full recovery, but we are excited to see him on the road to wellness.
