David E. Elkins, my teacher, my mentor, dear friend, and colleague from UNCSA really needs our help. David has been there for me more times than I can count. I honestly couldn’t have gotten through my schooling after all my personal turmoils during those four years where I was privileged enough to learn from David. He didn’t hesitate to help when I needed it. If you’re a colleague of his through film and television I’m sure you know David’s spirit and kindness. He’s there when you need him and even before you know you do. He’s one of the most reliable people I have the honor of knowing.
In recent years our friend and colleague has found himself needing assistance following his 5th back surgery, and over 7 weeks spent in the hospital. He’s had to deal with many medical expenses, challenges, and hardships after retirement from UNCSA. He is tasked with more expenses tacked on just to give him more ease of life and quality of day-to-day mobility. David is now confined to a manual wheelchair just to be mobile. He has had to have an in-house lift system installed so that he can get to the main living level.
It would help tremendously if he could get an electric scooter or wheelchair to get around easier, and would also need a car carrier for the scooter or wheelchair. His old scooter is 12 years old and has finally stopped working. Both the lift system and car carrier, unfortunately, are not covered by insurance and the wheelchair/scooter was not approved by his medical insurance. This is a burden for anyone, especially after retirement let alone without insurance covering the majority of the cost or in David's case any of the cost. It is an urgent matter that has taken a toll emotionally, physically, mentally, and financially for him and his wife.
I just ask of you to do what you can to help out someone who has helped many of us throughout the years. He’s given us so much in time, education, knowledge, hope, and laughs, that I am asking you to help me help David as best we can. Approximately $7500 is needed for the items mentioned. Anything you can do to help out would be more than greatly appreciated not only by David but also myself. I’m sure many of you want to see him lead a happy life, especially after retirement from such an illustrious career in and out of the education system.
I know things are tough for everyone because of Covid-19 but if you can spare just $5.00, and enough of you contribute, we can reach the goal. Thank you so much for what you can do and what you have done.
