Let’s Help Oscar & David Duran

Hello Friends,

Earlier this month the Duran Family received difficult news. After completing a routine re-application for his visa through our government’s Optional Training Program, Oscar was informed his visa was rejected.  Oscar graduated Whitworth in 2018 as an international student from the Dominican Republic. He worked for the past year-and-a-half as a Networks Operation Technician via his OPT visa at Imprezzio, a software company in Spokane. He just received a promotion at Imprezzio. His visa rejection was not reflective of Oscar’s hard work in our country.

Oscar financially supports his brother David, a first year international student at Whitworth University. Because Oscar’s visa was rejected, he can no longer work in the US, nor afford housing for himself and David, nor pay for David’s tuition.

On top of this, due to COVID restrictions, David Duran lost his job at Sodexo earlier in the spring. David was counting on this job to pay $6,000 in tuition fees.

Due to Oscar’s loss of visa, and David’s loss of job, the Duran Family cannot pay for David’s remaining tuition balance of $8,000. If unpaid, David cannot register for classes, nor transfer credits to a new institution. David’s unpaid tuition bill will soon go to collections and begin accruing interest. The Duran Family already accrued significant debt paying David’s $5,000 down payment for Whitworth. They are unable to pay the remaining $8,000.

David and Oscar spoke with Whitworth Student Accounting Services several times. Unfortunately, Whitworth cannot lower the remaining cost of David’s tuition.

Here’s the ask: Would you help the Duran Family pay David’s remaining tuition bill? David and Oscar already raised $1,500, bringing the total amount needed to $6,500. 100% of all donated funds will go to David’s tuition.

As for Oscar, after meeting with an immigration attorney, it is not likely his visa  status will change. Therefore, Oscar is traveling back to the Dominican Republic on June 19.

Oscar worked hard to be the first in his family to attend college. Oscar worked hard to get scholarships to pay for Whitworth as an international student from the DR. Oscar worked hard to graduate from Whitworth and get a great job in Spokane. After all this, he worked hard to enable his brother David to attend Whitworth. Let’s celebrate Oscar’s hard work by sending him to the DR without worrying how to pay the remaining $6,500.

Thank you for your help. The Duran Family greatly appreciates your assistance in this especially difficult season.
