David Clark, Sober Warrior, Superman & Superdad

Spende geschützt
Dear friends,

Yesterday, a bright light left us to shine on for even more to see.  After complications from back surgery, David Clark, Superman to some, Sober Warrior to others, fought an incredibly valiant fight.

The running, athletic and sobriety community as well as David’s friends and family have been so amazingly supportive and overwhelming with love and requests on how to help.  On behalf of David’s mom, his incredibly strong girlfriend, Courtney and David’s amazing children, this official family fund is being established.  The most impactful thing the community can do right now is contribute to ensuring that David has a funeral befitting of the warrior that he was.  Generous in spirit, time and compassion, David would never ask for help for himself, but was always at the willing to lend his mind, body and heart to anyone who would need it.  As you may know, David recently lost his father, so you can only imagine how difficult this must be, both emotionally and financially for his family.

The primary focus of this fundraiser is to first cover funeral expenses, any medical expenses, rent to support Courtney and his mom with any left over to be used to establish a fund for his 3 children.  For folks that do not know, because of the COVID crisis, Courtney has been out of work and not eligible for unemployment.  Things are dire and bills were already beginning to rack up because of the perfect storm of losing his father, the COVID crisis and this medical emergency.  (David was still trying to pay off the expenses for his father’s funeral).  Small things to us, like getting tags on their car to be legal were put aside to help his mother, who had recently moved in with them following her husband’s passing.  Rent is due, food is needed (gift cards for food places are also welcomed).  We know times are tough for folks, but if you are in a position to give, please consider doing so.  Because, as David truly believed, WE are Superman…and our Superman needs us now more than ever.

One would say that David faced death a thousand times before, so much so that he chose to live the life of a thousand lives.  But, it didn’t stop there.  David was passionate and committed to ensure that everyone around him got to live the life they were truly meant to live.

Quick Edit and Update:  Donna Marie and I are dear friends of David (and Courtney's) from Colorado (Donna Marie in the Denver area/Leadville and I in Colorado Springs).  I first met David at a race some years back, when I saw an advertisement for a 12 hour run on a mountain in Boulder.  Just as you have all had that "David" experience, my life was changed forever as a result.  This GoFundMe has been set up with Courtney (David's girlfriend) as the beneficiary to raise money to help David's family.  The funds will go to paying David's father's (who had just passed away) funeral expenses, any expenses for David's memorial and burial, rent for Courtney and David's mom (who was living with them after her husband passed), living expenses for Courtney and his mom, some of the child support that David's ex so heavily relies on, tags for their cars and things like food and essentials until Courtney, his mom and the family can figure things out.  In short, these funds are so that the family can breathe while they heal, and to ensure that no one loses their home until things can be figured out.  Courtney was named a beneficiary, as she will have the most direct access to all of the beautiful people that David has as family in his life, as well as direct contact with their landlord and bills that need to be paid, and will be able to directly withdraw these funds as needed.  Please reach out if you have any further questions.  On behalf of David's loving family, we thank you.
From David's reflections this past New Year's:
"My daughter took this photo last year as I gave a quick silent thank you for all that has happened in my life. All the changes I have made and all the pain that has shaped me. I don’t give a shit that today is the last day of 2019 or that 2020 is full of new possibilities... because that is the lie of tomorrow. This day is worth your attention regardless of what the calendar says. Today is worth your commitment to be better, to love yourself more and to shut the fucking door on yesterday. We change because we are no longer willing to be a prisoner to the hope of tomorrow- we change forever by changing right now. " --David Clark, Superman
