Hi, my name is Kim. I have started this fundraiser for my step-dad David. He has been sick since October. He attributed his symptoms to acid relux and changed his diet. His symptoms kept getting worse, so he started taking an antacid. He slowly became intolerant to many foods, and was losing weight fast. He is self employed, and without insurance, so he struggled with his symptoms for a long time before seeking out professional medical help. By that time, he had lost over 70 pounds. The strapping man i knew to be 6 ' 2, 250 pounds of muscle, has now become fraile, weak and lethargic. He hasn't been able to work in months, and will not be able to return to work. On June 21st, after many scans, labs, upper and lower endoscopies, and biopsies from 3 different sites, we finally got some answers. He was diagnosed with terminal, stage 4 metastatic adenocarcinoma (abdominal cancer). His options: intense chemotherapy for treatment that will hopefully prolong his life for 1-2 years, or go on hospice care. In the words of Dave himself, "I'm not ready for my dirt nap yet". So July 6th he will be having surgery to get his port placed and begin his lifelong chemotherapy journey. He will need to travel from Viroqua to Lacrosse 2-3 times per week for chemotherapy and labs. Dave is unable to drive himself, because his abdominal pain is the worst in the car. Every little bump in the road is extremely painful. Not to mention how weak and malnourished is. So my mother, his wife, Mavis, will be taking time off work to make the drives to Lacrosse each week. She has cut down her hours at Mobil gas station to working weekends only. As you can imagine, working weekends only does not pay anyone's bills. Especially when you are used to a 2 person household income. They have a house payment, a truck payment, regular bills and groceries, and gas to drive to Lacrosse 3 times a week.
All my life I have witnessed these 2 people work their asses off to make ends meet. Never once have they asked for anyone's help. So I'm asking FOR them. Every little bit adds up. Please, if you are able, donate what you can. Dave is worried about Mavis, and leaving her to carry their financial burden on her own. Mavis is worried about Dave, and wanting him to enjoy the time he has and not worry about her! Let's help them focus on what's really important, spending quality time together, and not worrying about how their bills will get paid! Every little bit helps! Thank you so much!
