Our dear friend and classmate, David Bishop (AFI '07) died on May 6, 2023.
While rafting the Racecourse section of the Rio Grande in Northern New Mexico with two friends, their raft capsized in the cold, fast-moving waters. His friends survived, but rescuers were not able to get to David soon enough to save him.
Before his untimely death, David had been working on his passion project, one he was very proud of.
David's documentary: America’s Hidden Stories: The Osage Murders, had been commissioned by the Smithsonian Channel. In the documentary, he goes on an investigative and deeply personal journey to uncover the shocking true story behind the murders of up to 400 members of the Osage Nation for their headrights (oil). David was proud of his Osage Nation heritage and was a fierce advocate for his community.
Sadly, David didn't get to watch his doc in all its glory when it aired on May 29th, 3 weeks after his death.
The event:
In homage to 'Bishop' as a filmmaker, a member of the Osage Nation, and as a dear friend, we will be premiering his documentary to a live audience during his Celebration of Life on August 20, 2023.
Some of the musicians and cooks that were introduced in the documentary, and were David's friends, will be performing traditional Osage Nation music and sharing traditional foods. To celebrate David's life as a person and filmmaker, we need to raise funds for the following:
• 9 Osage Nation members to fly from Oklahoma to LA and back.
• Transportation for instruments.
• Groceries for the cooks.
• Thank you gifts for the musicians and cooks who are volunteering their time for this event.
Please consider a donation for David's Celebration of Life and film premiere.
Thank you for helping us put on a beautiful day for our friend, classmate and fellow filmmaker.
