On October 19th Dave received official confirmation that he has stage 4 adenocarcinoma- Lung Cancer
He and his wife were told that the treatment would be chemotherapy, immunology, and palliative care and that surgery and radiation were not possibilities. This devastating news came just as he and his wife were packing to move to South Carolina after two years of planning and arranging to maintain a Sarasota ministry field office. Shattered dreams to say the least.
Dave’s abiding faith in God and his reliance on the guidance of the Holy Spirit lead him to press on with their imminent move north to be halfway back to their kids and grandkids.
Arriving in Anderson SC, Dave and his wife maintained a temporary studio apartment while they sought the help of the unknown medical community. Almost immediately it was clear that God had brought Dave here as they were given a referral to an oncologist by a doctor attending their new church, skipping over establishing a relationship with a primary care physician.
Here is a bulleted breakdown of what happened next:
* Oncologist met and explained in great detail what was going on in Dave’s body, A three inch cancerous tumor is in his lower right lung with a large “mass” above that at the top of the same lung.
*Oncologist suggested that a brain scan be performed since this is the only part of his body that has not been scanned.
*Enter radiation oncologist who determined that these tumors are small enough to be destroyed with just one radiation treatment. Remember they said radiation was not an option?
*One week later - the cancer is gone with just a thirty minute treatment.
*After weeks of coughing blood and taking a codeine cough medicine, the oncologist sends Dave to see a pulmonologist to have the bleeding stopped, cauterized.
*One week later, the pulmonologist performs bronchoscopy. Not only is bleeding stopped but the lower tumor is then debulked. This removed pressure that was pressing the tumor against the bronchia restricting his breathing.
*This having been done, a second surgery to place a stent in the bronchia to keep it open is scheduled.
Surprise- after weeks of GI issues the stent operation was interrupted by a Gastrenterology surgery. Dave had a dead small intestine removed. Two cancerous timers were inside this- now gone!
Dave and his wife made a decision early on that chemotherapy would be off the table. After connecting with a childhood friend, who Dave had not talked with in 50 years, who Dave knew was a 30 year cancer survivor, Dave began talking to his childhood buddie about alternative therapies, radical diet changes and much more about restoring Dave's immune system in order to fight off this cancer. His friend suggested he contact the Issels Cancer clinic in Santa Barbara CA to inquire about their immunotherapy program that uses your body's own immunities to treat and yes, bring this cancer into remission and cure it.
This highly personalized special care is mostly not covered by insurance so this where you come in.
The initial treatment begins with Dave going to Issels Santa Barbara Cancer Clinic for three weeks.
The total cost of this part of the treatment without travel and accommodations is $ 25,500 which must be paid in advance.
After returning home the outpatient therapies will begin at an average cost of $ 8500 which will make up the remaining
$ 25,000 dollars.
All this to say - Dave’s fervent prayers, along with the prayer of many of you, are and will be a big part of his treatment. He is deeply convinced that God has brought this next step about, to be the cure for Dave's cancer.
