To honor Dave's life, Alan and I thought a picnic table would be a way to fill a void that we all feel. We decided on picking an area we know he enjoyed. Dave never once turned me down on a Cronan Ranch adventure. He put up with my endless desire to climb hills. The West Ridge is well known to all of us. Love it or hate it...it has meaning. It is a place to race up and shred down. A place to sit and look at the views. The wooden picnic table that is at the top of the climb is where the new picnic table will go.
I reached out to the Bureau of Land Management and got approval, guidance, and a very caring and supporting gentlemen to lend a hand. The table that was selected is a Belson 238-EV8 E-series. The gentlemen lending the helping hand suggested these. They sustain weather and look nice. We opted on the 8 foot instead of 6 foot. The frame is black and the coated steel is green with a diamond pattern.
The memory plate will say: "Everything in moderation...including moderation". -David Martinenko 1959-2021 You live on in our heart and minds of the loving family and friends you left behind.
And, FYI...that's a Dave quote...typical Dave.
We are not 100% sure on price yet. The table is inexpensive...around $800. We are waiting on a quote for the memory plate. We are thinking $1500 will cover expenses. The plaque will be made by Patriot Awards in Rancho Cordova. I'm thinking $700-$800 for that.
We know how much Dave meant to so many people in the cycling community and beyond. We want to express to Dave's family how much he meant to us...and the great loss we feel. The location is easily accessible to his family and to us. A place to sit and think...remember all the good times...his banter...his smile...his strength. AND probably a great place to laugh about his famous fire side "TED Talks"...only Dave. No topic off limits...
If you want to contribute to the bench, please do. I'll be in charge of the funds and will give the money to the BLM and to the folks doing the memory plate. If there is money remaining we want that to go to Dave's granddaughter, Aribella.
We all know a table won't replace Dave, but it's a way to deal with the grief for his family and friends.
