As many know by now, Dave’s world changed drastically in July. What began as swelling and shortness of breath led to an ER visit and an unexpected 17-day hospital stay, during which doctors removed over 50 pounds of fluid. After undergoing a heart procedure to help reduce the fluid output, and extensive testing, the shocking news came at the end of July: a diagnosis of stage 4 metastatic lung cancer. Since then, Dave has undergone chemotherapy and targeted chemo, and may soon undergo radiation.

For those who know Dave and his son Curtis, they have always shared a passion for music, sports, and travelling. For many years they’ve taken advantage of every bit of free time and channeled every spare cent into making memories on the road, discovering new destinations, attending concerts, and cheering at sporting events together. They’ve been on a mission to visit every state in the U.S., with just 13 left (not including Alaska and Hawaii). Now, in the face of this diagnosis, and despite the challenges that come with it, that dream has taken on even greater meaning, and Dave is determined to see it happen while he’s still healthy enough to enjoy the journey with his son. They are planning a road trip from California to Maine, hoping to fill the trip with music, unique events, odd roadside attractions, and unforgettable experiences along the way.
