Dave Bernard Cancer Fundraiser

Donation protected
David Bernard is battling advanced stage oro-laryngeal (mouth and throat) cancer   He has been unable to work since last spring, when David’s health crisis started with knee surgery.  This was followed by systemic infections requiring IV antibiotics, all topped off with an advanced stage oral laryngeal cancer diagnosis in September 2020.

David’s mouth and throat cancer has required his wife Gerry to resign from her job to stay home as caretaker as he engages in an intensive battle involving chemotherapy, radiation, and tube feeding. Doctors are throwing everything at this cancer demon, and though he has medicare, David and Gerry are paying 20% out of pocket on many expenses, have little help with prescriptions, and some procedures are not covered at all. The severity and complexity of the cancer means frequent testing, imaging, and doctor involvement as a daily norm. As they enter week five of intensive treatments which are scheduled to go at least another four weeks at the minimum, we are seeking help.  Dave and Gerry have tapped out their savings as they struggle to pay current medical bills and the upcoming health expenses through December.

Who is David Bernard?

David and Gerry Bernard built their house and raised their children, Galen, Vivie, and Luke, on the property they bought in Nelson County, 1979.
As many of you may know, David is a talented musician, masterful at keyboard, guitar, and mandolin. His early bands were Daily Planet (1980s) and Mongrel (early 2000s); he also works as a duo with Steve Wilson, and most recently as the keyboard player/vocalist with Fatty Lumpkin and the Love Hogs. He enjoys playing all kinds of music with all kinds of players.

He’s made his living as a master carpenter and contractor in the Nelson County/Charlottesville area, having started his work there with low-income housing initiatives in Nelson County and Charlottesville. Recently he began Castle Creek Tiny Homes (see on Face Book), an enterprise that was sadly interrupted by his health crisis.

He has long been involved in his community.  He  supported Building Goodness Foundation by volunteering to help rebuild in Haiti, was involved in starting the youth soccer league in Nelson County in the 1980s and coached soccer for decades in Nelson County programs.

Any amount you can donate will make a significant difference to help ease the financial burden that Dave and Gerry face.
