Daughter is a short film about River, a trans woman who returns home to attend her estranged father's funeral, but instead of closure, she finds that the funeral has been staged and that her father faked his death to lure her into so-called "conversion therapy."

The film is inspired by a real story shared by Megan Smith, who is a trans woman and knows too well about family rejection. It echoes many stories shared by trans people. Megan is the associate producer and consultant on the film.

While family rejection stands out as one of the most challenging traumas, the so-called “conversion therapy” is responsible for doubling the attempts of suicide among trans people. The risk is four times as high for younger people. That’s a lot of people who want to end their lives because someone they love refuses to accept them as they are.

We are making this film because we believe it is essential to speak about it. We hope that it will illuminate the impact of “conversion” on the lives of trans people and their families.

We have an engaging script crafted over a year that depicts River and her experiences as nuanced and authentic. It does not demonize or ridicule the parents. It captures a human snapped against a backdrop of a poignant social commentary.

We will launch a nationwide talent search and work with casting directors in Miami, New York, and L.A. to cast a trans woman actress to play the part of River and bring an exceptional ensemble of actors on set.
