Music for Mental Health George R Alvey, Jr
The goals of this project are to raise awareness of mental health needs, to fight stigma and to bring attention to the work of and to benefit mental health non-profits. By wedding my passions as a musician and a mental health counselor I am recording a collection of pieces which conveys what it is like to struggle with a severe and chronic mental illness.
Through a cd and a series of benefit concerts, I hope to raise awareness of the enormous need for free and low cost mental health services and to also combat stigma. All proceeds from the cd and concerts will benefit local mental health non-profits.
The pieces of music will tell the story of a former client, Dorothy, who tragically did not survive her struggle and ended her life at 26. I also am relying on my experiences from being a mental health counselor for 15 years and of having suffered with a debilitating depression that kept me from working for 10 years.
You can read more about Dorothy's and my own journey on my website, George R Alvey, Jr I have been working on this project on and off over five years and would like to finish the cd within a month but need these additional funds to do so.
I have received much from mental health non-profits in my time of need. Alhough I have worked as a volunteer and served on several of their boards, I would like to give back on a larger scale through this project.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and I appreciate your kind consideration of this project.
