Carolyn’s Healing Journey
The picture above is of my sister Carolyn Lowrie and I from Christmas 2014. (Carolyn’s in red). Carolyn loves Christmas and it was a happy time to have her living back in Houston after living in California for over 25 years.
A year after this picture was taken Carolyn was diagnosed with Stage 1 Mouth cancer and had her first surgery. Her prognosis was good and the doctors did not recommend any radiation or chemotherapy treatment. At the end of February 2016 she unfortunately lost her company sponsored group medical insurance but was able to enroll in an individual self- paid insurance plan. Thank goodness pre-existing conditions cannot preclude people from getting medical coverage.
By March 2016, Carolyn’s forward progress stopped. She knew something was not right. The cancer was back and in June 2016 she had her second and more invasive surgery in the same jaw/neck area. She was now diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer and radiation and chemotherapy was recommended. Carolyn endured 7 weeks of daily radiation along with weekly chemotherapy. The process was grueling at best and the pain is ever constant.
Carolyn lives by herself but she has not gone through this battle alone. She has had a wonderful support group of family and friends that made up a village. I am grateful to them all who prayed for her and helped her get this far. God Bless all the doctors, nurses and care-givers for the help they give.
Unfortunately, the cancer has not been stopped and has now spread. A third surgery is now necessary but the doctors recommend to first start out with 12 more weeks of much stronger and debilitating chemotherapy in hopes to shrink the tumors under her chin and lung. Doctors are also investigating possible clinical trials that may be affective against this aggressive cancer. We are all praying that this chemotherapy will have some effect on this horrible disease.
Throughout this long journey, there are many expenses that are not covered by insurance. This is where we can help. All funds collected will go directly towards Carolyn’s medical expenses to help cover her upcoming new year’s out of pocket deductible and medical incidentals for her upcoming surgery. Carolyn has not yet been able to return to work. Therefore any amount that you can donate will be so greatly appreciated to help her minimize the financial stress so she can focus on her healing.
Carolyn’s healing is possible with the grace of God. She has been strong and positive when many would not and she is not giving up.
Thank you in advance for any consideration that you can extend with prayers and donations.
