Daryl Brooks - Wheelchair Car
Donation protected
Hi, I'm Julie. In July 2016 my younger brother, Daryl, was involved in a serious motorcycle accident. He is now a T2 Complete Paraplegic. I would appreciate help raising funds towards a wheelchair accessible car for him.
This car would help Daryl continue to be as independent as possible. It will provide the ability for him to be useful and contribute to his family by helping with shopping, school pick-ups and even possibly returning to work.
Daryl was flown to Royal North Shore Hospital where doctors discovered his spine was broken in several places causing severe damage to his spinal cord. He had also damaged his neck, wrist and hand. Daryl’s sternum was broken as well as a number of ribs which seriously affected his breathing. In ICU, he was sedated and put on a breathing ventilator. Then he had surgery to fuse his spine, insert rods, and surgeries to his hand and wrist. My brother almost died and was unconscious for most of the first few weeks. As a T2 complete paraplegic, Daryl is paralysed from his upper chest down.
Three months later Daryl is making slow progress in a rehabilitation hospital. He will be hospitalised for up to another 6 months. It is devastating to us as a family to watch Daryl experience pain along with the struggle to regain some of his strength and independence.
Daryl's doctors say that he will not recover. However, they do hope that he will gain independence in his wheelchair, and work towards driving a car again. Daryl will always need carers to help him to get up and dressed, and with his numerous daily activities. With lots of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy he is striving to learn how to be independent. He is already driving an electric wheelchair. Fortunately, Daryl has had no head injuries and although he is still healing he should be able to use his hands and arms well into the future.
The circumstances of Daryl's accident have resulted in very little funding. Daryl has a loving family that he would dearly love to continue to provide for and support. He would love to go home but still has so much to learn. Daryl is just now learning how to balance sitting up.

Daryl may not walk again but his health will improve. A car would make his life more full and purposeful, helping him to contribute to his family's needs and possibly being able to return to work in the distant future. Daryl specifically would like a VW transporter LWB to contribute fully to his independence. Any donations no matter how small will be greatly appreciated.
