Darryl's TBI Recovery

Donation protected
My name is Jen Fuller James.  I am a Psychotherapist living and working in Woodland Park, Colorado.  My younger brother, Darryl Fuller, is an Outdoor Education Teacher at The Colorado Rocky Mountain School in Carbondale, Colorado.  He and his wife, Susan are avid outdoor enthusiasts who are happiest while biking or skiing. They, along with their dog, Mesa love living and playing in the mountains.

On May 21, Darryl, was back-country skiing with a friend, and he was in a bad accident. He lost his footing after losing a ski and took a very long fall over rocks, ice and snow. His ski partner was able to get down to him, access him and stabilize him while they awaited a helicopter rescue.

He was taken to the hospital in Aspen where they assessed him, intubated him and put him on pain medication.  He was then flown by another helicopter to a trauma hospital in Grand Junction. He had a severely broken leg and an unspecified head injury. He was in the ICU, and then once stabilized and breathing on his own, he was transferred to the neuro wing. His wife, Susan has been by his side almost constantly for the last two weeks, along with support from both of my parents and my step-mom.  My husband and I went to see him this past weekend and offer our support.

Darryl’s leg was in very bad shape upon arrival in Grand Junction so he had surgery the first night to stabilize his leg, and it took several days to get the swelling down enough to do surgery to actually repair the break with a rod and screws. Although Darryl was wearing a good helmet, his brain was jostled and bumped a lot during his fall, and he currently has a significant traumatic brain injury. He is about to be transferred to a hospital in Denver that specializes in TBIs. His recovery from both injuries will be long and challenging.

The funds raised will be used to pay for medical bills and treatments not covered by his medical insurance and temporary housing and living expenses for Susan and other family members while he is recovering and rehabbing in Denver.

I know so many people are sending prayers, healing energy and positive thoughts to Darryl, Susan and the rest of the family, and we appreciate that so very much. Many people have reached out and asked what they can do to help us; and at the moment this is the best way to help and support both Darryl and Susan.
