OUR JOURNEY OF HOPE TO LIVE LONGER, TOGETHER - DARRYL & LINA

Darryl Smart & Lina Camargo

This is our journey. We’ve been together for 11 years and are the parents of 2 beautiful children, Samuel (8) and Daniela (6). Life has thrown us some curveballs before and we have adapted and moved on, but in June of 2023, our life got turned upside down. Darryl was diagnosed with terminal cancer, a Glioblastoma Multiforme, one of the most aggressive and incurable types of brain tumour with a life expectancy of 12-15 months. Standard care of treatment (radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and surgery) will only give him a few extra months, but we need more and giving up is not an option. Darryl wants to be here with us, especially for Samuel and Daniela. So we have spent months researching and reading medical journals and emailing specialists; until we found promising medical alternative treatments that will help extend his life, and fight this horrible disease. However, these treatments are expensive and are not covered by government or private health insurance, and getting some of them is beyond our financial means. This is why we have to come to our family, our friends and our community to help us financially, as we cannot do it alone.

Darryl has already started some of these additional treatments with the support of some specialists. We can already see how well he is responding. His tumour is now stable and even though sometimes the radiotherapy and chemotherapy get the best of him, he generally feels energized and strong, which is often not the case for patients with his condition. We also have been travelling to Ottawa, as we found a neurosurgeon who can operate and remove the tumour. So knowing that there are other possibilities and seeing results are making him feel empowered, optimistic, and hopeful that we will somehow beat this disease together. And Hope is one of the best antidotes for conquering any disease!

We want you all to know that this GoFundMe was not a decision we took lightly. We know now how hard it is to recognize that we cannot do it alone. So we are asking you to help us in this journey by giving Darryl and our family the gift of time so we can be together for many years.

Esta es nuestra historia. Nos conocimos hace 11 años y somos los padres de dos maravillosos hijos, Samuel (8) y Daniela (6). La vida nos ha presentado con situaciones dificiles e inesperadas he igual nos hemos adaptado y seguido adelante, pero en junio de 2023, nuestra vida dio un vuelco total. A Darryl lo diagnosticaron con un cáncer terminal, un glioblastoma multiforme, uno de los tipos de tumor cerebral más agresivos e incurables, con una esperanza de vida de 12 a 15 meses. El tratamiento estándar (radioterapia, quimioterapia y cirugía) sólo le dará unos meses más de vida, pero nosotros necesitamos más y rendirnos no es una opción. Darryl quiere estar aquí con nosotros, especialmente por Samuel y Daniela. Por eso hemos pasado meses investigando, leyendo revistas médicas y enviando correos electrónicos a especialistas; hasta que logramos encontrar unos tratamientos médicos alternativos prometedores que ayudarán a prolongar su vida y combatir esta horrible enfermedad. Sin embargo, estos tratamientos son costosos y no están cubiertos por el gobierno o el seguro médico privado, y obtener algunos de ellos está fuera de nuestras posibilidades financieras. Es por eso que estamos recurriendo a nuestra familia, a nuestros amigos y a nuestra comunidad para que nos ayuden económicamente, ya que esto no podemos hacerlo solos.

Darryl ya inició algunos de estos tratamientos adicionales con el apoyo de algunos especialistas. Y ya podemos ver lo bien que está respondiendo. Su tumor ahora está estable y, aunque a veces la radioterapia y la quimioterapia lo afectan, en general se ha estado sintiendo con energía y fuerte, lo que a menudo no es el caso de los pacientes con esta enfermedad. También hemos tenido que estar viajando a Ottawa, ya que encontramos un neurocirujano que puede operar y remover el tumor. El hecho de saber que hay otras posibilidades y ver resultados lo hace sentir fortalecido, optimista y con la esperanza de que de alguna manera venceremos esta enfermedad juntos. ¡Y la esperanza es uno de los mejores antídotos para vencer cualquier enfermedad!
