Help Darryl Battle Cancer, Kidney Failure & Stay Strong

Storyteller. Mentor. Fighter.
Darryl Glover has spent his life illuminating stories that too often go untold, especially within Black and Indigenous communities. As the visionary behind DANCING IN THE RAIN MEDIA, he’s preserved hidden histories, mentored future storytellers, and built bridges through the power of film. His camera doesn’t just record, it empowers.

Whether mentoring youth, chronicling cultural celebrations, or producing award-winning broadcasts, Darryl’s work reflects a deep love for his community and an unwavering commitment to truth and equity. He’s shown up for our communities time and again, not for recognition, but because it’s who he is.

Beyond his creative achievements, Darryl is a devoted husband, a loving father, and a pillar of strength to all who know him. Even while facing serious health challenges, he’s continued to create, teach, and serve.

Why Darryl Matters:
Many people are unaware that Darryl took up a camera professionally after his initial kidney diagnosis, using filmmaking as both therapy and a purpose. Storytelling became more than a profession; it became a form of healing. It was how he turned fear into focus and service.

That moment of clarity also gave birth to the name of his company, DANCING IN THE RAIN MEDIA, a reflection of his mindset during that storm. Even in the middle of health challenges, he knew he had to find a way to dance through it. Since then, Darryl has donated countless hours documenting community events, mentoring youth, and telling stories that matter.

The Battle:
Darryl’s kidney issues began in 2013 with a diagnosis of kidney failure. After years of trying to slow its progression and beginning dialysis in 2016, he eventually received a transplant in 2017. But just two months later, while still under care at Swedish Medical Center, a medical error led to serious complications, including organ rejection and a virus.

He quietly fought through the next two years, staying as active in the community as his health would allow because that, too, was a special kind of healing. Despite his best efforts, the kidney failed, and he returned to dialysis in the fall of 2020.

In 2022, just weeks away from being approved for a second transplant, new test results revealed something far more serious: Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, a rare and aggressive blood cancer.

After the diagnosis, there were signs of real progress. By December 2024, key cancer markers had dropped to encouraging levels, and hope was on the rise. But that progress was short-lived. In a devastating turn, recent labs showed a 1000 percent spike in those same markers in just six months.

Without immediate intervention, doctors warn if the next 6 months labs are similar to the last 6 months then it will be life-threatening. To fight back, Darryl is beginning aggressive therapy over the next 6 to 12 months, treatment that brings intense side effects and requires him to pause the creative work he loves.

Showing Up Despite the Pain:
Through every setback, Darryl has remained rooted in resilience, faith, and a deep commitment to serving his community. Over the years, Darryl rarely spoke about the pain he was carrying. He chose not to make his health struggles the focus; instead, he poured his energy into storytelling, uplifting others, and being an active member of the community. That work became its own kind of healing.

His presence is powerful, not because he's free from hardship, but because he shows up despite it. Whether behind the camera at cultural events, mentoring young creatives, or helping others tell their stories, Darryl has remained a steady, grounding force.

What many didn’t see were the days he worked through fatigue, pain, and hospital visits, choosing purpose over pity. Even when his body was fighting to keep up, his heart never stopped giving.

Now, as this aggressive cancer demands his full attention, he’s had to pause his projects, mentoring, and income-generating work. This pause not only impacts his creative momentum, but it also puts real pressure on him and his family’s financial stability at an already vulnerable time.
