We are in need of medical care and a special surgical procedure for Darryl Sheldon.  Darryl is a 51 years old Canadian born with cerebral palsy and abandoned at birth by his parents.  He spent the first 9 years of his life lying under a table in a room with 38 other residents, too afraid to come out from under the table because he was assaulted by other residents who were mentally ill.  My sister rescued him when he was 9 years old after she discovered he was living in deplorable conditions as noted above.  He was fed “mush” and did not know how to chew normal food.  He had never been given any attention or stimulation in the form of a toy, a book, TV or radio.  He had never been outside the facility.  Our family got special permission for him to come and live with our family who was residing in the state of Vermont on that time.  Darryl has been living with us for over 40 years.   Our family is now living in the state of California.   Because of his cerebral palsy Darryl has had many episodes of bowel obstructions and required two surgeries.   He had a very serious illness in 2013 and developed a form of tuberculosis.  This required strong long term antibiotic therapy.  After being on antibiotics for 6 months Darryl developed chronic diarrhea and was diagnosed with a C-Difficele infection.  For over 2 ½ years Darryl has had this infection.  Every time he is taken off antibiotics and he has a relapse.  At the same time Darryl developed the C-Difficele infection he developed an MRSA infection in his ankle.  Both of his infections have required repeated hospitalizations, some times in the intensive care unit.  The only cure for his C-Difficele infection is a procedure called a fecal implant.  Because Darryl is a Canadian citizen he cannot get a social security card and he is only eligible for emergency medical care at the county hospital, Olive View, in Sylmar, CA.   He is not able to have a private family physician who can monitor his complicated medical conditions and this further complicates the situation since there is no continuity of care.  Dr. Allen Kamrava who is a board certified general and colorectal surgeon from Beverly Hills, CA has agreed to perform the fecal implant.  The procedure will be performed at the Linden Surgical Center in Beverly Hills, CA.  The cost of the procedure is $4700.  We are also seeking additional funding for medical care so that Darryl can be placed in a wound care clinic for more intensive treatment of his chronic staph infection that has not been amenable to multiple hospitalizations and antibiotic therapy.  It is hoped that we could avoid amputation for a non-healing leg ulcer.
