Darren has ALS - Help him get mobile

Donation protected

One year ago I was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).  ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a rapidly progressing illness that attacks the nerves that control voluntary muscles. There is no effective therapy and no cure.

As recently as October 2013, I was in perfect health, preparing to leave my longtime position as director of communications at USC for a similar role at Caltech. In November, I noticed a slight cramping in my right hand. By January 2014, my right arm was noticeably smaller and weaker than the left. By July, the condition had spread to my legs, and I was walking with a cane. In September, I needed a walker. At Christmas, I was confined to a wheelchair. I was 42 years old.

Today, my arms are largely paralyzed and I can no longer use my hands. Until recently, I was able to communicate with family and friends by using the voice-to-text feature on my cell phone. However, my speech has deteriorated to the point where it is no longer recognized by my phone or computer.

Fortunately, I have good health insurance, but it does not cover many of the things I need to get through each day. For example, due to the cost of having an in-home aide every day, my wife, Michelle, left her job late last year to become my primary caregiver.

Transportation is my biggest unmet challenge. I need the assistance of two people to get in and out of a car, and no car accommodates my motorized wheelchair, so I’m forced to use a small and uncomfortable transport wheelchair.

I’m seeking to raise funds to acquire an accessible van, which will allow me to safely travel to doctors’ appointments and visit family and friends. Unfortunately, the cost of a configured van is extraordinarily high. Even used models with high mileage list for tens of thousands of dollars, but without one, I will remain largely confined to my one-bedroom apartment, venturing out only when absolutely necessary. With safe and comfortable transportation, I can rejoin the world and regain my life as best as I am able.

I would appreciate a donation of any amount.

Thank you.
