As many will know, Darren was no stranger to adversity. Diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis twenty-five years ago, Darren would begin a decades long journey fighting against a disease that would take away his ability to work and leave him battling pain on a daily basis. In the face of this hardship, Darren refused to let his condition take away the role he valued above all else- as a devoted husband and loving father. Darren bravely rose to this challenge every morning, finding new ways to care and provide for his family and continuing to play an active role in the raising of his children and grandchildren. Darren took pride in helping to run his son’s online business and made himself available to his family at all hours, often making multiple trips out in the family car every day to make sure they all got to work and school safely.
Darren lived for the moments when all his family was around him; camping trips were planned down to the last detail and Darren made sure the Hynes family home always had an open door. Darren could always be counted on to have food and drink at the ready for anyone who needed company, a place to go, or just wanted to have a good time. Darren gave new meaning to the word’s strength and dedication and so it was heartbreaking in October of 2019, when Darren learned he would be facing a new fight when he was diagnosed with Aggressive Multiple Myeloma.
Faced with the reality that his cancer would at best allow him three more years, Darren did not let this affect his resolve to give his family everything he could and he made the brave decision to continue to fight for every moment that he would have left, starting chemo and radiation treatments at the Cross Cancer Institute.
Tragically, Darren developed an infection that would overwhelm his weakened immune system and he was admitted to the Sturgeon General Hospital in St. Albert on January 10th, fighting for his life. On January 18th, 2020, Darren passed away, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife; Jeannine, his children; Brian, Tyler, Kourtney, Krista, Kirra and his grandchildren Trinity, Ariana and Kayden.
The family wishes to thank everyone for their support in this trying time and to express appreciation for their privacy as they mourn the loss of Darren.
Darren dedicated his entire life to the well-being and care of his family. As a husband, father, mentor and friend, Darren fought up until his last moments, not for himself, but for those that he loved so dearly. Due to the sudden and unexpected nature of the loss of Darren, we ask that any donations be directed to continue his legacy of love and care for his family in this difficult time. All donations made to this page will go directly to his wife Jeannine to cover funeral costs and support Darren’s family in the weeks and months ahead.
