Hi, my name is Tara and I am creating this go fund me for my parents while my dad, Darrel, recovers from his laminectomy with spinal fusion. For those of you who don’t know, my dad is a polio survivor and lives with Post-Polio -Syndrome. Darrel acquired Polio at age 4 months from the Polio vaccine. He was paralyzed from the neck down and could only move his head, but all his movements came back except his right leg. He has worn a brace since he first learned to walk. He now has what is called Post-Polio Syndrome and it is affecting his spine in that it is bending in an L shape in his lower lumbar spine. Due to this bending it is causing his nerve to his left leg to be compressed and he needs this surgery to continue to be able to walk, lessen pain, and hopefully be pain free. He may have to have a total lumbar fusion to correct the deformity. Due to his post-polio syndrome rehab will be a long challenge for him as his muscles from the neck down are weakened by polio, post-polio syndrome, and the fact he is unable to walk without his brace. This go fund me is to help my parents out with medical and rehab expenses, as well as living expenses, while my dad is out of work, since he was denied temporary disability since this is a spinal issue. They will also have to remodel their shower, as well as add a ramp to the house for my dad to have easier access. With his post polio syndrome, his recovery process could be longer than expected. If you have ever had the privilege of meeting my dad, you know exactly the type of guy he is. Even with his own disability he has dedicated his life to serving others and the community and is constantly going out of his way to help others. I can’t even put into words how proud I am to be his daughter. My dad is the last person to want to ask for help, but the last thing I want is for my parents to worry about expenses while my dad navigates through his recovery process, however that may look.
