Darrell Hough - Cancer Support

Darrell Hough.  He’s MY Father by blood, but he is a Father Figure, Uncle, Friend, Mentor and Encourager to so many others.

Hi all, my name is Drea Eady (originally a Hough).  On Friday September 18th, 2020, my first main man, my strong encourager, my Dad, Darrell Hough, was diagnosed with stage 4 carcinoma, presenting as a mass in his spine and cancer in his lymph nodes.  Pain started in August of 2020 and we thought he had a rib out of place.  A little physical therapy, some muscle relaxers, hugs from the Grandkids and things would be better.  Though the hugs helped, the back pain continued to worsen.  Dad was able to finally get in for a CT scan and the results were shocking.

“It’s bone cancer, Dre.  He said it’s bad”, is the phone call I received that Friday morning.  Mom & Dad just got off the phone with the Doctor and called my Brother and I to let us know the results.  An immediate drive to the ER for an expedited oncology workup was the plan, and none of us could wrap our minds around it.  That’s where it started.

We’ve seen the ups and downs of what the future could hold for Dad and some days that comes with tears, and others a glimpse of hope.  He is still at the University of Michigan Hospital receiving radiation and working with physical and occupational therapy.  The pain is debilitating and makes it almost impossible for him to stand or sit up for more than a minute at a time.  This comes with its own challenges.  Dad has never been one to stay in bed and do nothing, and he won’t start now.  He is pushing himself in every physical therapy session and working so hard to get home to his 7 Grandkids.

There are some needs that have arisen out of this, and that, my friends, is where you can come in.  The primary need is that Dad needs a wheelchair.  Not just any ol’ wheelchair.  A powered chair with recline.  This allows him to be mobile for necessary appointments and to get around the house.  These chairs are not often covered by insurance (we are seeing the difficulty of this task currently) so the out-of pocket cost can be north of $5000.  The second hurdle we are up against is a vehicle that will allow Dad to get in and out without twisting.  Their current truck will not suffice and so we are on the hunt for a minivan or SUV that will allow the space needed.  Additionally, anyone who has dealt with extended medical care knows the extent of charges and bills that can pile up.  So on top of those two needs, we have already seen the cost of care, even with excellent insurance.

We are surrounded by such a great multitude, which has been a beautiful glimpse of Heaven on Earth.  The blessings and love that have already been poured out are immense and have been overwhelming.  To think there are more people who want to help a family such as ours is beyond me, but I also know that people are asking where they can give.  We covet your prayers and generosity.

With all our love and gratitude.
