I’m taking out this time to observe and say some words about Darnell Rawls. In the little time, we had he inspired me to be the best I could be for my kids because he was the best! Returning from trapping, hunting wild game, and gardening he’d lie on the sofa. A little big-eyed sad puppy dog face boy walks up to his father and says, dad, I want some McDonald’s. He’d get up and hop into that yellow Volkswagen to drive 33 miles down a 2-lane highway to bring his son back some McDonald’s.
See, he never told me he can’t, and that inspired me to never have an "I can't attitude" toward my kids.
The only Christmas memories imprinted into my head were me and him in that car and I was holding my tractor-trailer truck as big as a loaf of bread and 1/2. It must have been something I wanted.
I can remember more things in the back seat, one of them I think was a BB gun. I remember riding my first bike, without the training wheels, I told him I wanted the training wheels off.
"Dad, I want my bike like Timmy", my first cousin.
Somehow in prison for life, he managed to find a way to get brand-new bikes delivered to me growing up. So, I must find a way, to bring him back home. I would have taken out insurance, but I was under the impression that the State took care of all expenses. They would have, but you can't view the body.
