Help Dar recover from her Stroke

As friends of Darlynes and the family for over 25  years, we wanted to set up this fund for them and Dar, to help with her recovery after the Massive Stroke she had. Here is the story below.

On Sunday April 22 our sweet and loving friend Darlyne Miller had a massive stroke. The stroke caused 2 blood clots to form on the left side of her head, affecting the entire left hemisphere of her brain. At the time of her stroke, The Millers  were at their home in Montgomery, Texas, where Dar had just made breakfast. She got up to grab her fork from the counter, when her right arm went limp, and she couldn't find her words to talk. Her husband, Jonnie called 911 but they did not answer. Jonnie having worked in cardiovascular medicine years ago, knew they did not have time to wait. Her son J.L. picked her up and loaded her into the car. Jonnie then took her to the fire station in Montgomery, where he had the ambulance met them and took her to Memorial Hermann in The Woodlands, TX.

After arriving at the ER, doctors found 2 blood clots and attempted to dissolve them using TPA . Unfortunately,  this method was unsuccessful and the doctors had to remove them surgically. The next morning after Dar’s CT scan, they noticed her brain had swollen significantly over night. The left side of her brain was pushing on the right side causing more damage. The doctors decided they needed to do a left bone flap,  in which they removed the left side of her skull in order to reduce the swelling and stop further damage. Her skull will remain off for the next 2 months.

Darlyne has been in the SICU ( Surgical intensive care unit) for 12 days now as she recovers from the dramatic brain trauma she experienced. The left side of the brain  controls the right side of the body, your speech, personality and ability to reason. All things Darlyne will have to relearn going forward. Initially Darlyne had lost all movement on the right side of her body, she was unresponsive to doctors, could not  breath on her own and did not recognize her husband, children, family or friends. Over the last few days however, she has improved greatly. She is now more awake and alert as to what is happening. She moved her right arm and leg a little bit, and is actively moving her left arm and leg.  She is finally breathing on her own, and is responding to the doctors and her family. She will respond to her family's voices and pictures, but they are unsure whether she knows who they are. She still can not talk or walk on her own. Relearning to speak and walk can take months and sometimes years to regain.

The Doctors have told the family that it is too early to tell the extent of the damage caused by the stroke on her brain at this time. Darlyne remains in SICU, where her family has been beside her around the clock praying & loving on her. They have been playing her favorite music, telling her stories, showing her photos, in hopes of awakening her memory. The doctors are hoping to move Darlyne to TIRR in the coming weeks  to start her rehabilitation of walking, sitting up on her own, holding her head up, using her right arm and learning to talk again.

A little bit about the family:

Darlyne and Jonnie have been married for 31 years this August.  The have 2 beautiful children; Britt 29 & JL 24. Britt recently married her husband Jon this past December. The wedding  was planned, designed and executed entirely by Darlyne and Jonnie at their home in Montgomery. Her son JL is currently finishing up his junior semester at North Texas State University before he returns home to help with his moms recovery.  Her family has remained constantly by her side taking turns sleeping overnight with her in SICU. Her daughter Brittany posted this on facebook about her mom and their family and we wanted to share it.

“  Thank you to all who have been praying for my momma, we just have to keep praying. My mom has always been our rock in the family and the one who has kept everything going. She was there for all my dad's  surgeries over the years including both his cancer treatments of melanoma in the cornea of his eye in 2000, his prostate cancer back in 2008, both his neck surgeries, his knee replacements and many others. My mom has always kept everything going and taking care of all the important stuff; while my dad worked harder than any man i know to take care our family.  When my brother was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 10, she was there for jl, helping him and supporting him. When i flipped off a slide at the park and broke my right arm at the age of 2, (while my dad waited at the bottom for me), she didnt kill my dad for letting me break my arm lol, she just made sure i got the coolest pink cast around. My family has overcome a lot over  the years and my mom was always the rock that kept us together, she never complained or asked for help. Even after her back surgery, she didn't slow down or stop taking care of the bills and us. Now we get to be her rock, we get to be strong for her. My mom would be overjoyed with all the love, and support people have shown so thank you for your support, love and the continued prayers. It brings tears to my eyes to see how many people love my momma. I know my mom may never be the same again, that the mom I once knew maybe gone, but as long as she healthy and happy thats all the matters.  I feel so lost without her. Not being able to talk to her everyday, Or call her About how to rewire a chandelier, Stucco a wall, fix something, Cook something, or Just to vent About whatever was bothering me. I don't know what I will do if I lose her. I just want her to be ok, Even if she is different, and for my dad to be healthy and not stress about to much. I want to take a minute to recognize my amazing dad, who has always worked harder than any man i know. He is the most selfless daddy and husband, he never asks for anything for himself or complained when he worked 14 hour days in and out of hospitals.  He just wanted to make my mom happy and support our family. Everything he does is for our family. My dad was laid off in Nov 2016 at 62 with only 3 years left till retirement, the company did not offer him a retirement package, taking his life insurance, and leaving him to find a new job. Being number 1 in the nation for 3 years in a row with his company and having one of the most impressive and experienced pharmaceutical resumes around. He thought finding a job would be no problem, with his long career in the medical field. However, since then a lot if things have happened. From trying to sell their home in the woodlands, several surgeries that came up and of course my wedding (in which he built everything for) and has yet to find a  new job. And it's not because he is not qualified, i think its his age, which really breaks my heart and upsets me. Because he is more qualified and deserves those jobs too. When I was talking to my dad the other day about mom and how we are going to take care of her, he said to me " you know Britt, I have been wondering and asking myself, why haven't I gotten any of the jobs i recently interviewed for, and i guess i know why now. So that i could be here to take care of your mom. I guess GOD just knew this was gonna happen, and thats i wasn't supposed to get those jobs." It breaks my heart to see my dad having to go through this with my mom, and not being able to work has been so hard for him. But he has found a job, taking care of my mom and filling her shoes until she gets better. My mom is my rock, but my dad is my hero. I just wanted everyone to know how amazing and strong my dad has been too, stepping up to figure out the bills and taking care of my mom, and giving her all his love attention.  My dad, brother and I appreciate everyone's prayers and love more than you know. It truly means the world to us especially my dad. We love you momma, your my best friend and always will be. Stay strong, we will be here by your side every step of the way.” ♡♡♡...♡♡♡…

A lot of people have asked how and what they can do to help Darlyne and her family during this time and going forward. Which is why we have posted this go fund for them.  Darlynes hospital bills have already added up significantly, and will only continue to grow. From her stay in the hospital to future surgeries, and extensive rehab they will be more than the family can handle. Darlyne has a long road to recovery, which will not be cheap, and the Insurance company will not cover enough. She will be in the hospital then a rehab center for the next 6-8 months to a year.

On top of ALL that they have had going on, Jonnie has been left to deal with all the bills and taking care of Darlyne, who's medical and hospital bills (as we mention before) will be astronomical as you can imagine. Both kids have stepped up to help, putting their own lives on hold as well. As you read from Brittany’s post above their family has been through a lot over the years, and we want to help this sweet family a much as we can during this time while they focus on getting Darlyne better. No one is ever prepared for something this traumatic to happen, especially when it is very unexpected. Right now they are just trying to take it day by day hoping for their wife and mom to get better.

We post this” GO FUND ME” in an effort to reach out to all those who have known, love and care about Darlylne, and have asked, “ How can I help?”. The biggest thing the family needs help with is helping to cover Darlynes extensive recovery and rehabilitation.

We also post this to reach out to those who do not know them, but are willing to help this beautiful, loving and overwhelmed family as they stand beside their Mom. Praying for a miracle and quick recovery of their fun, loving, wild, crazy, giving, and beautiful wife and mom.
