Darlene's Long Road to Recovery

Donation protected
Mother. Daughter. Aunty. ER Nurse. Amazing friend. Fun colleague. An always smiling face.  Determined ...

Darlene Shaw is embarking on her long journey to recovery and needs your help!

For those who know Darlene you know she is a hardworking and fun-loving single mom who experienced a stroke at the young age of 35 in May of 2016.  It was an ischemic stroke that caused hemiplegia (total paralysis to the right side of the body).  Darlene spent a week in ICU, 7 weeks as an in-patient at the University Hospital of Northern BC, and is now working on her recovery in the community while she continues to raise Hadanse and get back to the business of living.  Since then Darlene has had to learn the basics again, much like a toddler, from walking and talking to reading and writing.  It has been a lot of work, and she has come a long way since those first fear-filled days after the stroke.

The ongoing effects of the stroke affect her memory, word recall, walking and stability, judgment and decision-making, understanding, attention, reasoning, and problem-solving.  In addition to this she is burdened with ongoing weakness, paralysis, joint problems and constant neuropathic pain.  This has resulted in a reliance on others to make sure her and Hadanse have what they need on a daily basis and Darlene is so grateful for the help and support she has experienced!

We are super excited to learn that Darlene has been accepted to G.F Strong in Vancouver, BC to support her stroke recovery in January 2017!  With this excitement comes the worry... how can Darlene make this work?

We are hoping with your help this part of her recovery journey will be a success!  Funds raised will help offset the costs of transportation, accommodation and nutrition, medication and supporting her daughter who will be staying in Prince George.  It also helps ease the burden of her growing debt due to the costs associated with the stroke that are not covered by our medical system.

By helping Darlene you will be contributing to the recovery of not only her physical health, you will making sure her irreverent, awkward and inappropriate personality comes back as strong as ever!

Darlene is determined to re-gain the skills and abilities to live a full life, both as a mother and again as nurse.

Let's help put her back on the other side of the stethoscope!

Any donation, no matter how big or small, will make a huge difference and will be appreciated beyond measure... although be prepared for public displays of affection if you run in Darlene (she is an enthusiastic hugger)!!
