Darl Ok “Daryl” Kim, age 90 of Honolulu, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2024, surrounded by his family and loved ones.

Darl Ok was born in South Pyongan Province of Korea on September 1, 1933. He immigrated to South Korea at the age of 16 years old and graduated from Inchang High School with top honors allowing him to enter into the prestigious Seoul National University with a full scholarship. After graduating Seoul National University, he received his Masters Degree from Dong Guk University and moved to Honolulu, Hawaii in 1964. He entered into the University of Hawaii and received a second Masters Degree in Linguistics in 1969. While attending Christ United Methodist Church on Keeaumoku Street, Darl Ok met his wife Lee, Boo Ja and was married in December 1966.

Darl Ok and Boo Ja were married for 58 years and spent their life together in Hawaii, both working for the state of Hawaii’s department of education for over 35 years. They hold many precious moments with their daughter Sandra (Sam) and their son Donald (Judy) and their seven grandchildren; Lauren, Sammy, Reese, Liv, Noa, Nathan & Nicole.

Darl Ok lived his entire life as a Christian with a grateful and servants heart, and treated all people with the utmost kindness and compassion always. In his retirement, he taught English language classes at Kyungki University in Suwon, Korea and fulfilled his calling of teaching the gospel in rural areas, especially to those who sought after God. His personal ministry was that of recognizing and giving value to each person and helping those who were in need.

He had a full life of health and happiness with his tennis buddies, who called him “Kim” and the “Golden Gang” enjoyed winning many doubles tennis competitions through all the years! Darl Ok truly celebrated life and his adventurous spirit by his love for traveling, ballroom dancing, speaking multiple languages, writing poetry, and he had an unstoppable infectious laugh. He was also a Master Go Player (Korean Chess) and was a dedicated scholar to the end. Darl Ok had the mindset of often sharing knowledge and imparted great wisdom and thought provoking conversations, especially with his beloved fellow brothers and sisters at St Luke’s Church. His dedication and love for others would uplift and bring much joy to everyone he conversed with. We will always remember and celebrate Darl and his life of humility, love, kindness to others, and most profoundly his dedication to God.

Darl received God’s call on January 30th due to a stroke, and has now graduated to his next life reverently, with all his loved ones surrounding him. We will miss his heart and his timeless smile always.

Services will be held at Valley of the Temple
Memorial Park on Feb 29 at 9:30am.
