Darius fundraiser for Summer Intensive Walnut Hill

Donation protected
I was recently accepted into a summer dance program.  I auditioned for Walnut Hill School for the Arts during the summer. My hope is to receive a full scholarship in order to attend the boarding school. Many boys receive full tuition to attend the school and a lot of them get accepted after they participate in the summer program.

I just submitted the application last Monday and two days later I was accepted in the program. My mom told me the good news and I was so excited. She told me that she will see what she can do but there is no guarantee that I maybe able to attend. I received a partial scholarship but still need to try to come up with the balance.

My love for dancing started when I attended a middle school magnet program and was admitted for playing the saxophone.  While I was there I became interested in dancing and musical theatre. I performed as 'Fritz' twice in the Nutcracker and a few other school productions.

One summer I was accepted in the Alvin Ailey camp. I am currently studying ballet and modern at the Peabody Institute under the Estelle boys for dance program.  I am also in another dance trop where I study hip-hop, jazz and tap. Plus in a few weeks I will be dancing again at Towson University in a men's dance ensemble group under the direction of Vincent Thomas.  Last summer I was blessed with the opportunity to receive a scholarship to study at Berkshire Pulse in Massachusetts for 3 weeks, and at that time I found out about Walnut School for the Arts.

I am a Gifted and Talented student and my GPA is  over 3.75. My plan is to have a double major in dance/business and to minor in computer science.

I really would love to have this opportunity to attend Walnut Hill School for the Arts. The summer intensive program is a 5 week program and I will be studying dance 6 days a week. I really believe this will be beneficial for me, it will help me to obtain better training and to further develop my dancing technique. My mom has to make a decision by this coming Friday and she has to pay a $500 deposit to hold my spot. So I am hoping she can come up with this somehow and she advised me I have to help and figure out how to contribute for the remaining balance.

So that is why I am starting a Gofundme page to help achieve my dreams. I am hoping and believing. I thought it was important for me to include what I wrote and submitted to Walnut Hill School for the Arts for my essay questions to that you can obtain an overview of who I am.

Questions :Part-Short Answers

1.) Why do you want to attend Walnut Hill School for the Arts?
Walnut Hill a boarding as well has a day high school, which concludes of music, theater, visual art, film, media, dance, and innumerable theatrical prospectus. Walnut Hill has fundamental morals that reinforce the inner artistry of the scholars in the area such has community, creativity, excellence, growth, and respect which makes the community to be diverse as well empowering. Attending Walnut Hill School for the Arts wouldn’t just impact my personal artistry but will also discharge the hatred and intolerance of others. Viewing Walnut Hill at the initial period, released a dark hole filled with emptiness, insecurities, and destruction, which filled a heart with inspiration. Everyone has a destiny that will someday be relived or will be destroyed. Walnut Hill is that bloom towards my destiny which will conclude my career. I dislike hiding in the shadows, it’s time to step in the light and share my inner artistry.

2.) How do you see yourself contributing to the Walnut community?

“How wonderful it is that nobody needs wait a single moment before starting to improve the world” by Anne Frank. This quotation elucidates that with exertion and dictation that somebody can subsidize towards everyone. Every artist has their individual insecurities or even discomforts that created foolishness, which can be used to created magnificent forms of art. Throughout the summer I went to a wonderful dance studio called Berkshire Pulse by the direction of Bettina Montano. I learned new styles of dance such has Scottish Folk Dance, Latin Dance, and the Contact Improvisation which directed to the knowledge of Walnut Hill. One of my strongest contributes towards Walnut Hill is the willingness to learn new material every day, to try to perfect it. When I’m productive I generate chorography in my chamber or even draw it in my sketchbook. My creativity, determination, and willing to learn will help the community.

3.) Someday I would like to...

Someday my aspiration is to become a choreographer or become a principal dancer in the American Ballet Theater. Dancing as continuously been significant towards my life. Everywhere I’m dancing, in stores down the aisles, in the crosswalk, in classrooms, and when I’m not dancing, I create music. Using my “drum pad” to mash and compose to music towards my choreography. The Peabody Institute in Baltimore City is a wonderful place full of knowledge of the performance arts, but Walnut Hill is different it’s more than that, a boarding school where you work at your prime every day, teachers who want you to succeed in life and bring out the best in your students. I want to teach children who are underprivilege or can’t offered the expensive classes. I want to inspire young children to peruse their dreams and not have to hide in the shadows, but step into the light.

4.) To which other schools will you be applying?

Walnut Hill School for the Arts was the only school that I applied for this year. Last year and the year before that I applied to George Washington Carver, waitlisted number four. I’ve been declined before, and it doesn’t reflect on my behavior, but that doesn’t define who I am. Perhaps I wasn’t what they were looking for, but that life of a dancer. Someday I will get in a company and they're going to be lucky because if they say yes, they will know that I have been rejected before but, instead of letting that stop me from my dream, I’ll have used that as fuel to my fire. That I will continue to work for my dream because it is what keeps me going. When I’m dancing, I can shed my skin and not have to hide behind the timid nature that can be my exterior.

Part 2-

1). “All my life I have lived and behaved very much like [the] sandpiper- just running along the edges of different countries and continents, looking for something.” -Elizabeth, ‘30.

What are you looking for in your next community?

In my next community, I’m looking for a place that can inspire me not demote me. Right now, I live in a place where instead of being celebrated for who I am, I'm ignored and looked at as a number in the Baltimore County public schools' system. I want to be a part of a community that is inclusive not exclusive. A community that forces me to strive for success and making me step out into my own. Because instead of being a number I want to be me, someone who dances because that’s how they breathe their own air, not crumbling under society’s expectation of what a man or woman can be.

Walnut Hill has serval core values that challenge all students to strive for creativity, community, excellence, growth, and respect. The Sandpipers moves from place to place searching for the perfect environment to establish there a stable food supply for the colony. The community at Walnut Hill has a cultivate spirt of diversity which strength the community to accept everyone's differences instead of denigrating their differences.

“All my life I have lived and behaved very much like [the] sandpiper- just running along the edges of different countries and continents, looking for something.” -Elizabeth, ‘30. Much like the bird, I myself have travel and lived in different places such as Prague. Whether it was Prague or Baltimore, I still haven’t found that place or thing in general that allows me to breathe the air that is my dance and have the drive to carry out my day like dance does. Though drive is the foundation for dreams but, the environment in which they are carried out in is a very important part. That something like that of the bird is what I’m looking for in a community.

“At Walnut Hill, it means; living, working, and studying with a diverse and talented community of creative and passionate with people across the globe.” This community would be well fitting for me. A community where I'm just not a number, but someone who can contribute and be recognized for their artistry.  Walnut Hill is a school where I can grow and be that dancer that I’ve always known I was. This is that something like that of the bird is what I'm looking for in a community. Getting to spread my wings in flight to my new community.

Thank you for taking the time to read my page. If anyone would like to help or contribute to help send me to my summer intensive I will greatly appreciate it.  Word would not even be enough since he will be grateful. I hope my story touches your heart.

Sincerely,
Darius
