Dan’s Intensive Outpatient Program

Hello dear friends and family,

As many of you know, I’ve struggled with depression for many years now. It’s been slowly coming to a head and has become incredibly debilitating and disruptive to life, to say the least.

What you may or may not know, is that in October of 2021, I was admitted to an inpatient mental facility because of an unsuccessful suicide attempt. Since then, there have been additional attempts made as recent as mid-January. In order to facilitate a more intentional time of healing, drastic changes are in movement, and I’ve enrolled in an Intensive Outpatient therapy Program (IOP) with the Wellness Treatment Center in Denver. A local program like this was recommended to me after my inpatient stay, but I had to make the decision to either start my new job or go through the program. I started working out of necessity, though now this is, and undoubtedly was, the real necessity.

I essentially quit my job to fully commit to this, but my work at Share Our Selves in Orange County astoundingly and graciously responded with an offer to accommodate a part-time schedule so that I can still work a few half-days a week remotely. It's incredible to be working for an organization that values these things, and I've only been with them for three months. I will not be working for the first few weeks of the program to minimize stress and find a rhythm, but we will begin to incorporate work into my mornings in the coming weeks. To engage with this fully, I’ve recently moved back to Colorado and will be staying predominantly in Aurora with my brother Caleb, sis Anna, and their fur babies.

I’m writing because I care about you and ultimately, I truly just want to fill you in. I can use all the support I can get right now, whether emotional, spiritual, practical, etc. Over the years, many have offered financial assistance for me to enroll in a therapeutic program targeting my depression, so consider this my shameless formal ask. Insurance has authorized my enrollment in the program, and it will be costing about $4000-$5000, though I am asking for additional funds to help cover livings expenses with the limited work schedule and to help with the eventual transition back to California.

Having spent a week in the program so far, I can tell my doctor was correct in calling it the best program in the state, it has me feeling quite hopeful already. If you look at the schedule I’ve attached, it's 5 days a week in the afternoon with built-in aerobics, relaxation, stretching, stress management, self-forgiveness and acceptance, anti-rumination techniques, practical emotion regulation, crisis survival, and medication management. I'll be doing this for likely 9-10 weeks, or up to 12. I have weekly treatment plan and goal updates with physicians and therapists, the goal of which will be to set me up for success during, and well beyond my time in the program.

This is an investment in my long-term future. I have not been well, and I want to be well for myself and for my family, and it's time I accept the help that is needed. Some of you are giving me a place to stay, some are helping with Truly and Ezra as Chelsea cares for them in California, some are helping financially, some of have helped me personally over the years and you're helping now by just standing by my side.

Thank you for taking the time to let me fill you in,  please feel free to share this site and my story as far as you would like.

Dan

The IOP at the Wellness Treatment Center was developed 20 years ago when the book The Depression Cure inspired Dr. Louis Bruno to come out of retirement and create this program. Take a look at my weekly schedule- it’s five days a week with a two hour curriculum course and an hour of exercise. I also meet with a psychiatrist on Tuesdays, and Dr. Bruno on Thursday to discuss the previous week and treatment plans and goals moving forward. You're welcome to give by reaching out to them directly as well.
