Recovering from Coats' Horse Barn Fire

IIn the early morning hours of Feb 15, 2022, a blazing fire devastated the barn and livelihood of Dannielle Doemel Coates. Early estimates put the financial loss between $60,000-$80,000.

The top priority is to replenish winter feed supplies for the animals, start the process of rebuilding the barn, and replace the riding equipment and supplies needed for Danielle’s training and teaching.

All winter hay, grain, and supplements for the herd of 12 horses was lost, as well as more than 40 saddles, 60 bridles and halters, over 40 bits, saddlebags, lariats, grooming and farrier tools, a skid steer, and other tools and supplies too numerous to count.

Luckily, family members suffered no harm, and no horses were lost in the blaze, although a beloved dog and pet pig died. The recently restored barn had all new siding and an up-to-date electrical system, all of which is a total loss.

Dannielle, a lifelong horsewoman, channels her passion for connecting people and horses through Coates's Rescue Corral business. She rescues, rehabs, and rehomes horses; teaches children and adults riding skills and horse care; provides equine resources and supervision for special needs kids; and works closely with animal rescue groups throughout Wisconsin. Her rescue work is all-volunteer, and she often supplies the new owners of rehomed horses with equipment from her own collection.

Danni and Matt Coates and their six kids are well known for lending their time, materials, and passion to help anyone in need. Danni is my niece. I watched her get a job at the age of fourteen and ambitiously save to buy her first horse and equipment. Twenty-some years later, Danni extends that care and concern to a broad and open-ended community; many children and animals have found their way to Danni's doorstep and open heart. I have rarely met anyone as passionate about making a difference in people's lives as this young woman.
