Edgar ‘Danilo’ López Ramírez is 56 years old, originally from the village of San Esteban in eastern Guatemala. Danilo is married and a father of three children: 23, 13 and 3 years old, respectively.
Danilo grew up in a family of limited economic resources. His parents studied through second grade and worked hard to give Danilo opportunities. Danilo received a scholarship from World Vision Foundation in Guatemala to study at the technical level at the Centro Universitario de Oriente and later studied to get a degree in Social Work, with an emphasis on development management. Danilo has dedicated his career to serving others and started working at Catholic Relief Services in 2021, where he is a Family and Community Strengthening Specialist for Changing the Way We Care.
In April 2022, he noticed his lymph nodes swelling. He continued to experience flu-like symptoms (cough, shortness of breath, among others). Despite efforts to treat him, nothing worked. He was soon diagnosed with Lymphoma.
Danilo has had various tests to understand his diagnosis better. The doctors in Guatemala City are recommending chemotherapy, followed by immunotherapy. Thanks to CRS, he has medical insurance that will cover 80% of the expenses, but the cost of the remaining 20% is beyond his family's means. The total cost of all treatment is estimated to be $70,000 USD. The cost that Danilo and his family must pay for treatment is $14,000 USD. Any donations will go directly to Danilo's treatment bills.
Danilo says, “until today I continue to trust in God, so that there are generous hearts that can support me financially so that I can undergo the treatment indicated by the doctor. I continue to believe that God is in control of my life and that He will have mercy on me, my wife and my children. I hope that before the end of 2022 I can return to my work to support my family”.
