Daniele's Masters Degree in Film

Donation protected
Hello, and thank you for reading this.
Let me tell you about myself: my name is Daniele Guerra. I am an opera and theatre director, and I want to direct film.

"Der Freischütz", which I directed at Opéra de Metz and Rennes in France.

THE STORY SO FAR:
I am from Rome, and live in London. I trained as an opera singer at the Royal College of Music, and then moved into directing, which is my passion.

The UK premiére of the play "Purgatorio" by Ariel Dorfman, with Adjoa Andoh and Patrick Baladi, which I directed at the Arcola Theatre in London.

I have been lucky to work for several wonderful organisations over the last twenty years, in the UK and in Europe (Royal Opera House, Paris Opera, Glyndebourne, London Handel Festival, Latitude Festival, Arcola Theatre, Teatro Verdi in Trieste, Opéra de Metz, Opéra de Rennes, Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, Wexford Festival, Opera di Roma, Göttingen Handel Festival, Royal College of Music, Royal Academy of Music amongst others). And with some talented artists and performers.

I also teach at the Royal College of Music, and again I am lucky to work in a great institution, with gifted young singers.

"Il segreto di Susanna", which I directed at Teatro Verdi in Trieste, Italy.

Directing film has been my dream for a long time. In fact, most of my opera directing is inspired by film.
Although it is a very closed world, over the past years I have tried to get into film as much as possible: I observed some film directors, and I am developing a feature film in collaboration with a film producer in London. I am also volunteer Fundraising Manager for Fringe! Fest, an independent LGBTQ film festival in East London.

"L'occasione fa il Ladro", which I directed at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and Wexford Festival in Ireland.

THE GOOD NEWS:
A major opportunity to break into film is coming my way: I will take a Masters Degree in Film Directing at Goldsmiths, a university in London with an excellent reputation for the Arts. The course is one year, full-time, and starts in October 2017. It accepts only 8 directors per academic year: I am excited to have been offered a place. The MA is like a film school, and I will shoot a number of projects, culminating in a short film at the end of the year, realised with state-of-the-art facilities, equipment and cameras. This end-of-year short film will be my calling card when looking for work, and I will also be able to send it to film festivals.
Expanding my range to film will be an invaluable professional asset, and an investment for my future. It will give me access to working on film, TV, music videos, filmed opera and more – a whole new world of possibilities. It will also complement my opera directing, as film is now used frequently in opera productions.

"Cautionary Tales" by Errollyn Wallen, which I directed at Latitude Festival in the UK.

THE BAD NEWS:
The course costs £11.000, plus living expenses for a year. So I need around £20.000 in total (that’s €23.000, or $25.000). This is a lot of money for me: I work and support myself in London, but next year I won’t be able to work, as the course is full-time and intensive. I won't be able to teach at the Royal College of Music at all - my hours of teaching cannot be moved to accommodate the schedule of my MA.
Goldsmiths have offered me a £1000 Masters Scholarship, which is fantastic. Apart from this, I looked for funding extensively and there was hardly any scholarship I could even apply for. This is due to a combination of facts: it is a post-graduate course, the subject is film, I am not British, and I am over 35.
I have also raised £2000, by organising a fundraising event: I sang in a concert, and asked my guests to make a donation. I am grateful for their support. Special thanks to Melinda Hughes, Charles Edwards, George Mosley, Paul Laikin, Jonathan Dove, Daniel Burbidge, Matthew Greenberg, Simon Tabak,  Aude Thibaut de Maisières, Martin Deutz, Michael Frayn, and my dad.
